Mangalore, Jan 31: Mangalore is among the railway destinations earmarked for the 'World Class Stations' project across the country, said Mohan Menon, ADRM, Palghat Division.
Informing about the same at a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Thursday to discuss railway issues, Mr. Menon said that the Railway Board is in the process of defining the criteria that a World Class Railway Station must possess. “There is no doubt that Mangalore is among the destinations railway authorities have in mind for the purpose,” he said.
“The Railway Board addressing issues such as seemless connectivity, multi-functional complexes among several others. A Belgian Consultancy has been entrusted with the responsibility of marking railway destinations across the country. Mangalore and Calicut have been earmarked under the Palghat division. We will have to follow the development strategy proposed by the Railway Board,” Mr. Menon said.
Responding to the issue of construction of the Railway under bridge at Bajal-Padil raised by Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, the concerned official said that the tender will be floated in three weeks' time for the purpose.
N Yogish Bhat, MLA and Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, suggested construction of a flyover at Pandeshwar railway crossing near Amrith Talkies, as there is regular disruption to the heavy traffic on the road. A proposal for the same was asked to be submitted so that the estimated cost of the project is calculated upon before proceeding further with the plan.
Mr. Bhat also revealed on the occasion that the state government has in a latest order approved Rs. 5 .16 crore for construction of Railway Under Bridge (RUB) in place of Line Crossing No.146-B at Kankanady yard (Padil Bajal road) of which the state government's share would be Rs. 2.28 crores while the Ministry of Railways will spend Rs. 2.87 crores.
