Mangalore, Feb 1: The campus of St Aloysius is all bustling with activity with the commencement of the three-day fest called 'Aloysian Fest – 2013' which began on Thursday.

Unlike previous academic years when different streams such as science, arts, commerce and management had their own separate individual fests, the entire college came together this year and organised the 'Aloysian Fest' which is a unique combo of fests such as 'Acme', 'Art-beat', 'Imprints' and 'Spin-Out' along with new additions 'Astitva' and 'Aloysiad', the cultural and sports fest respectively.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the three-day national-level fest on Friday, Senior Manager of Indian Overseas Bank K Anil said that the roots of an individual always determined the heights to which the person could scale. “It is the moral education given by an institution that brings students to greater heights. Like Swami Vivekananda said, education is one that forms the character in a person, strengthens his mind and expands his intellect. Every day becomes a celebration when one realises the inner potential in himself,” he said, encouraging the students to do the same.

CEO and Managing Director of Karnataka Bank Ltd P Jayarama Bhat said that the college had maintained the discipline in imparting education and training throughout the years. Quoting Swami Vivekananda, he advised the students, “Do not lower your goals to the level of your abilities. Instead, raise your abilities to the height of your goals.”

Speaking about personal integration, Rector of St Aloysius College institutions Fr Joseph Ignatius Rodrigues in his presidential address said that a person stood out in the crowd due to his distinctive character, diverse qualities and by virtue of his integral personality. Life is a healthy balance and blend of variety of aspects and dimensions. Together with Intelligence Quotient, Emotional, Divine and Spiritual Quotient should also be given importance for an overall-development of an individual. Awareness of the sense of diversity of life is of great help to develop the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of human personality, he said.

Principal of the college Fr Swebert D'Silva, staff co-ordinator Dr Richard Gonsalves, vice-principal Fr Francis Almeida, Dr Ronald Nazareth and various heads of departments were present.

The inter-collegiate fest saw teams from 12 colleges in and around Mangalore participating in the commerce fest 'Acme' in unique events such as Mock-Stock, Governance & Politics, Investment & Bazaar, Crisis, Power & Energy and other based on their theme – 'Revolution'. A total of 15 teams have participated in the management fest 'Spin-Out' themed 'Sin City', which consisted of events such Chase, Loudmouth and Gambling Commission along with Best Manager.

The arts fest 'Art-beat' with 'Kaleidoscope' as its theme, had events such as Cine-scope, Toon Ads, Fin Min and Reel Deal, while 'Imprints' for students from the science stream, was a 'Tribute to late Scientists' having events such as Tech Guru, Yodha (Star of Imprints), Model-making etc. As part of Imprints there was a science exhibition titled 'Pravaah' with over 50 models categorised under 'Fermi Lab', 'Digi World', 'Knowledge Hub', 'Bio Maniacs' and 'Sea Shore'.

The sports fest 'Aloysiad' saw teams from 8 colleges in the men's category and four in the women's participating in the basketball tournament. Teams from 16 colleges (women) and 12 colleges (men) took part in the throw-ball and football tournaments respectively.

The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday dismissed the petition filed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah against Governor Thawarchand Gehlot's decision to sanction the complaint and investigation against him in the alleged Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam case.

Justice M Nagaprasanna said the facts narrated in the petition would undoubtedly require an investigation.

The court has also said that the Governor's order approving sanction to investigate against Siddaramaiah under section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act does not suffer from application of mind, instead has abundance of application of mind.

Meanwhile, the court rejected the request made by senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi to stay the order of the court. The court has vacated the interim order passed on August 19. In the interim order the trial court was directed not to take any precipitative action against Siddaramaiah. On August 17, Governor had approved sanction under section 17 A  of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 218 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita ( BNSS), citing three applications.

The court said the private complainants were justified in registering the complaint and seeking approval from the governor.

Insofar as private complainants seeking sanction under section 17A, the court said the provision nowhere requires only a police officer to seek sanction from a competent authority. The court further said it is in fact the duty of the private complainants to seek such approval.

Earlier, The High Court had completed its hearing in the case on September 12, and reserved its orders. It had also directed a special court in Bengaluru to defer further proceedings and not to take any precipitative action against the Chief Minister.

The case pertains to allegations that compensatory sites were allotted to Siddaramaiah's wife B M Parvathi in an upmarket area in Mysuru that had higher property value as compared to the location of her land that had been "acquired" by MUDA.
