Mangalore, Feb 4: In the backdrop of ongoing controversy over proposed Tipu University in Karnataka, Universal Welfare Forum (Uniwef) will be organising a convention with the slogan 'Tipu Sultan – A Great Humanitarian' on Thursday in Mangalore.
The convention will shed light on the truth and facts about the Tiger of Mysore who stood against the British, said Karnataka state present of Unifwef, Rafiuddin Kudroli.
Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, he said that few vested interests and prejudiced writers had been issuing malformed notions about Tipu and thereby deliberately trying to malign his name. Attempts are being made to put a black mark on his personality. In such a situation, there is a need to put the facts in front of people, he said.
Former chairman of Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission Dr C S Dwarakanath will be the chief guest on the occasion. Professor of History at Mangalore University Dr Barkoor Udaya will participate and Editor-in-chief of Vartha Bharati Kannada daily Abdussalam Puthige will preside. Imam of Masjid-e-Raza Mohammed Farooq will be the special guest. The programme will be held at 5.30 p.m. at Town Hall on Sunday, he said.
He clarified that the intention of the convention was not to place a resolution favoring a university named after Tipu Sultan. Aspects of Tipu's patriotism and tolerance towards other religions are being politicised to put a blotch on his personality and the intention is only to bring the real picture to the surface, he said.
District president U K Khalid and convener Salim Malar were present during the press conference.
