Riyadh, Feb 10: If it was an international cricket match then Indians in general and Mangaloreans in specific would have had a reason to go hysteric again. The student teams representing national cricket arch rivals India and Pakistan were face to face at the Saudi Gazette Inter-School Cricket Tournament  where Indian International School Riyadh (IISR) won the Saudi Gazette  Inter-School Cricket Tournament (U-16 and U-19) beating Pakistani International  School (Nasiriyah) recently.

Hisham Shaikh, a Mangalore-based Saudi resident, led IISR U-19 team from the front with his dashing knock of 104 runs which included 10 fours and 2 sixes. He also took one wicket of the opponents. The team won the match by 14 runs. Batting first IISR scored 206-5 while PISR managed to chase 192-7 in the allotted 20 overs.

Adnan Khan of the winning team remained unbeaten at 57. Faisal took three wickets, Abdul Rahman took two wickets while Hisham and Bilal grabbed one wicket each. Hisham Shaikh was declared Man of the match for his 104 runs and Player of the tournament for scoring 373 runs in four innings walking away with six wickets in the tournament.

He was awarded by former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin who was the chief guest of the prize distribution ceremony.

Hisham Shaikh was also selected by Shahid Afridi for the U-19 Saudi Cricket talent hunt programme organised by Royal Academy of Cricket at Riyadh on Jan 20, 2013 under the ICC and Asian Cricket development program.

Hisham started his cricketing career at the age of 10 and also won the U-14 ARAB NEWS inter school championship while leading the Middle East International School Riyadh in 2010-11.  He is a gifted sportsman who also plays soccer for the local club and recently won the award for scoring 10 goals in a tournament. He was the member of IISR Athletic team to represent Cluster meet -Saudi Inter School Athletic championship in Jubail in 2012 and won the medal for discus and javelin throw. He has to his credit the honour of representing Saudi School in the Indian National Athletic meet in 2011 held at Meerut in India. He also took cricket coaching at Harrow Cricket Academy in London UK during his visit in 2010.

By all means India can undoubtedly wait for the young lad to make an entry at the national level.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
