Mangalore, Feb 20: Following high drama in the morning over the selection of members for the newly formed district-level election committee constituted to select candidates for the upcoming urban local body elections, members of the Congress party including the rebel-in-chief former Mayor Ashraf staged a 'unity' show in front of the media.
Addressing media persons at the district Congress office later in the day on Wednesday, Mr. Ashraf said that he is willing to forget the incident and continue to work as a responsible Congress worker for the sake of victory in MCC polls.
The press conference which was attended by Congress leader K S Mohammed Masood, against whom Mr. Ashraf had spoken in the media in the morning, U T Khader, MLA, Ivan D'Souza, KPCC member, Kodijal Ibrahim, Moideen Bawa and others chose to play down the high tension conflict which was on display at the office in the morning after B Janardhana Poojary announced the newly formed committee members.
Mr. Ibrahim who addressed the press, said that the party members will abide by the decision taken by senior leaders B Ramanath Rai and B Janardhana Poojary in unison.
“Out of the 21 people appointed in the committee, 8 are Muslims, 5 are Christians and 2 are Jains, making it 15 members from the minority communities in all. Mr. Rai and Mr. Poojary have selected a committee on the basis of secular principles that the party believes in. The Congress party will regain its hold on the MCC in this year's election”, he said.
U T Khader, MLA, also sought to dismiss the disunity factor within the Congress by stating that the rebellion displayed by Mr. Ashraf in the morning was due to a “communication gap”.
