Mangalore, Feb 23: Issue based social service programmes are the need of the hour, said Sheena Shetty, Director of Jana Shikshana Trust and Ombudsman of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), DK Zilla Panchayath.
He was speaking as a guest of honour at the valedictory ceremony of 'Spandana 2013', the two day national level student social workers' symposium on the theme 'Convergence of Social Work Methods for Social Transformation' held at Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work, Mangalore, on Friday.
K H Abdulla, Former President of the Alumni Association of Roshni Nilaya, who was the chief guest of the programme, said that unlike in the 1960's many students are pusruing MSW and social work courses, which is a good development.
Studies in Social Work helps students develop their personality which will help them in whichever career they choose. Students of social work also attract God's mercy, as the intent is always service, Mr. Abdulla opined.
Dr. Sophia Fernandes, Principal, Roshni Nilaya, urged students to value “evidence based practice” when it comes to social work while advising them never to forget the core values of social work such as service and social justice.
