Mangalore, Feb 23: A large number of fake mobile handsets and smartphones and tablets including duplicates of the latest high-end Samsung Galaxy S3 are doing the rounds in the city's grey market.
After Friday's police raid on Dubai Market shopping complex near Central Market, it was found that fraudsters had created software to programme Chinese handsets to look like original handsets and tablets of Samsung.
Handsets worth several lakh rupees were seized in the raid carried out by Mangalore North Police.
Led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Kavita, the police team zeroed in on seven shops at Dubai Market, police sources said sources said.
It is learnt that these shops were selling fake Samsung phones, including sleek smartphones for Rs 2000 to Rs 3000.
The raid was carried out based on a complaint by officials of Samsung company. Eight persons have been taken to custody after the raid.
