Bantwal, Feb 25: A young lady was made to death after an attempt to rape. The deceased is Sowmya (22) from Kuntalpadi of Balthila village near Kalladka in Bantwal taluk.

The Bantwal police have taken to custody one Sathish from the same village in this connection.

It is said that Sowmya was on her way home after visiting her aunt in Manipal when the incident occurred. It is suspected that the miscreant must have attempted to rape Sowmya and when she resisted, he must have killed her.

The dead body of Sowmya was found in a pond situated at the end of a steep road. The murderer must have dragged the death body all the way till the pond. While Sowmya's mobile was found on the road, her bag and shawl were found near bushes along the road.

It is said that Sathish, who is in the police net now, had even in the past misbehaved with Sowmya. Sowmya's mother has filed a complaint with the police stating this point. Sathish is said to have been teasing and making advances towards several women in the village.

Meanwhile, Vidya, one of Sowmya's neighbours who was taking the route found the abandoned mobile, which she picked and took home. On discovering that it was Sowmya's mobile she was about to return it to her family.

Meantime Sowmya's mobile had a call from her aunt from Manipal. Vidya handed over the phone to Somya's family.

When her aunt asked Sowmya's mother if Somya had come home, the family was worried as to why her mobile was lying on the road and she did not turn up at home.

Suspicious and scared, Sowmya's family rushed to the spot where the mobile was found and started a search. When they reached the pond, they discovered that Sowmya was dead.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
