Rly budget offers bunch of gifts including M'lore-B'lore express train to Port city

Mangalore: Frequent travelers shuttling between Mangalore and Bangalore may now heave a sigh of relief because the railway budget has solution for the present long waiting list, denying tickets between Mangalore and Bangalore trains.

Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union Railway Minister in his budget speech has announced a new express train between Mangalore and Bangalore.

Reading out the Railway Budget 2013-14 before the Speaker of the House in the Parliament, Mr. Bansal announced that a new express train service Bangalore – Mangalore Express (Weekly) will be introduced this year.

The new express trains announced by the Minister in the Railway budget speech are Madgaon – Mangalore Intercity Express (Daily - Via Udupi,Karwar), Mangalore – Kacheguda Express (Weekly - Via Dhone, Gooty, Renigunta, Coimbatore), Hubli – Mumbai Express (Weekly - Via Miraj, Pune), Jabalpur – Yesvantpur Express (Weekly -Via Nagpur, Dharmavaram), Kamakhya (Guwahati) – Bangalore AC Express (Weekly ) and Nagercoil – Bangalore Express (Daily- Via Madurai, Tiruchchirappalli) as well.

Among the new passenger trains announced by the Minister is the Talguppa – Shimoga Town Passenger (Daily).

Mr. Bansal announced that the run of 12653/12654 Mangalore – Tiruchchirappalli Express will be extended to Puducherry. Similarly, 17307/17308 Bagalkot-Yesvantpur Express and 12577/12578 Darbhanga-Bangalore Express and 16591/16592 Hubli-Bangalore Express will all be extended to Mysore, 12629/12630 Yesvantpur – Hazrat Nizamuddun Sampark Kranti Express (2 days) will be extended to Chandigarh, 56513/56514 Bangalore-Nagore Passenger will be extended to Karaikal and 56275/56276 Mysore-Shimoga Town Passenger will be extended to Talguppa.

The frequency of 56221/56222/56525/56526 Bangalore – Tumkur Passenger trains will be extended from 6 to 7 days, while the frequency of 12629/12630 Yesvantpur – Hazrat Nizamuddun Sampark Kranti Express will be extended from 2 to 4 days, Mr. Bansal announced.

With a view of contributing to the national skill development programme of the Government, Ministry of Railways would impart skills to the youth in railway related trades in 25 locations in the country including Mangalore, Mr. Bansal said in his speech.

New DEMU Services will be introduced in Bhatkal – Thokur and Madgaon – Karwar routes, the Minister said.

Doubling work will be carried out along Tirupati - Katpadi, Shoranur-Mangalore 3rd line, Tumkur-Arsikere routes, he said. Mandya-Yeliyur route will witness completion of doubling work this year, he said while stating that electrification work will be completed at the Yelahanka-Someshwara section this year.

The Minister also announced resumption of work on new line projects of Chickmagalur - Sakleshpur and Bengaluru - Satyamangalam, which were pending for want of resources and other mandatory clearances, as Karnataka government has agreed to give land free of cost and bear 50% of the cost.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has issued an urgent warning following the discovery of potentially cancer-causing chemicals in cakes sold by certain bakeries across the state.

Recent tests conducted by the department revealed that some cake samples, particularly those with vibrant colors, contain harmful synthetic coloring agents such as Allura Red, a substance known to pose health risks. The findings have raised concerns about the use of artificial colors in bakery products, especially given their potential link to cancer and other serious health conditions.

"We routinely test various food products, and this time, our officials noticed unusually dark-colored cakes on the market," said Srinivas K, Commissioner of Food Safety for Karnataka. "Upon testing, we found that a few cakes contained Allura Red, a synthetic dye associated with health risks."

The use of artificial colors, especially in popular cakes like red velvet and pineapple varieties, is widespread as it attracts customers, particularly children. However, many bakers prefer using natural, safer alternatives, while some opt for synthetic dyes to enhance the cake's visual appeal.

"Most bakeries use permissible, natural colors that are safe for consumption. Unfortunately, a few are resorting to synthetic dyes just to make their cakes more attractive," said a bakery owner from Electronic City, speaking anonymously.

Medical experts are warning that consuming synthetic colors can lead to numerous health issues, including asthma and allergic reactions.

"Some of these artificial dyes are carcinogenic, and prolonged exposure could have serious consequences, especially for children and young adults," cautioned Dr. Vandana G, a private medical practitioner.

While the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) confirms that only a limited number of samples tested positive for harmful colors, legal action is being taken against the violators.

"There is no need for widespread panic or halting production. We are closely monitoring the situation, and only a few bakeries were found to be non-compliant. Rest assured, appropriate legal measures are underway," assured an FSSAI official.
