Bangalore, Feb 27: Terming his arrest by Crime Branch of the Bangalore Police, as kidnap, journalist Muthi-ur-Rahman Siddiqui said that there existed an institutional bias against people belonging to the Muslim community in the state apparatus and the media.

Addressing a press conference a day after his release from jail, 26-year-old Hubli based youth said that the police would never have arrested him on such charges, if he was not a Muslim. “Police harboured an “institutional bias” against the Muslim community” he added.

Barely able to conceal his resentment toward law enforcement agencies and sections of the media that branded him as the “mastermind” of a terror module, Mr. Siddiqui said: “The media and the police need to be more sensitive toward the downtrodden, Dalits and Muslims. The way the media and the police behaved raises basic questions about their attitude toward Muslims. Muslims are often cast by them in stereotypes. There is an institutional bias which manifests in such cases. This is not just about me; it is about hundreds like me who are in jails (across the country) on terror charges. Muslims are not terrorists.”

He said, “The media forgot the 'A' in the ABC of Journalism (Accuracy-Brevity-Clarity).”

Mr. Siddiqui was arrested by the Crime Branch of the Bangalore Police, along with 14 others, on August 29, 2012 on charges of plotting to assassinate prominent Hindutva leaders as well as some Kannada journalists. The National Investigation Agency, which later took over the case, found no evidence against either Mr. Siddiqui or Yusuf Nalband in their charge sheet.

Reiterating that he and his roommates were kidnapped by police, he said they were picked up simultaneously from the same house between 8:30 am and 9 am that day, FIR recorded their time of arrest as 3:30.

He alleged that the police did not follow any protocol during his arrest. “They did not inform our families.

They did not tell us what we were being arrested for. He said all of them were made to sign 30-40 blank papers and were later surprised when one such paper was used as an arrest memo.

He said though he was not physically tortured in the prison, he faced mental torture. Others arrested with him were physically tortured, he revealed.

Pleading the case of the other 13 still in jail, Mr. Siddiqui said, “According to the (Bangalore) police and the media, I am the mastermind. If I am the mastermind, why are the others still in jail? I hope they too will get justice.” He said journalism was his passion and he wanted to continue. Asked if he would sue the police, he said, “I haven't thought about that. I want to spend time with my family first.”

He said he knew Shoaib Ahmed Mirza, Aijaz Ahmed Mirza, Syed Yusuf Nalaband, Abdulla Hakim Jamadar, Riyaz Ahmed Byahatti, as all of them hailed from Hubli and lived in the same room. He said the experience had changed him a lot as a person.

Mr. Nalband (28), the technician who was released along with Mr. Siddiqui, was reticent during the press conference. He later told The Hindu, “I could not sleep the whole of last [Monday] night. I had all kinds of thoughts. I am not sure if life will be normal again. I am hoping I can get back to my life, God willing.”

He also alleged that the Hyderabad police, who assisted the Bangalore police during the arrests, forced the accused to wear Islamic skull caps before taking them out of the house where they were arrested. “I don't know why they did that,” he said.

Mangaluru, Sept 24: A blanket of gloom descended over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi as heavy rains battered the coastal Karnataka districts on Tuesday. Substantial rainfall has been drenching the region since Monday, intensifying as the day progressed.

In Dakshina Kannada, torrential downpours began early Tuesday, followed by overcast skies and humid conditions.

The showers persisted intermittently through the afternoon, with areas like Beltangady experiencing moderate rainfall, while Puttur and Bellare bore the brunt of heavier storms.

Overnight showers were reported in Bantwal, and Mangaluru city, along with its surrounding rural areas, witnessed a steady increase in rainfall, peaking by the evening.

After a brief respite, the return of intense rainfall has brought a welcome drop in temperatures. In Udupi, Karkala, Udupi city, Kundapur, and Hebri taluks all faced substantial rains throughout the day, continuing from late Sunday night.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the coastal districts, predicting more heavy rainfall in the coming hours.

A yellow alert has been placed for Wednesday, signaling the likelihood of additional downpours. Fishermen have been cautioned to remain vigilant, as the possibility of strong winds looms over the coastal waters.

lokayukta.jpg

Mysuru, Oct 1: The Karnataka Lokayukta team on Tuesday arrived at the disputed plot in Mysuru and began investigation into the MUDA case against CM Siddaramaiah and his wife, news agency ANI reported. Snehamayi Krishna, the complainant in the case was also present with the team.

Sources stated that ED sleuths might issue a notice to CM Siddaramaiah at any time and issue summons to him for questioning. The sleuths are also keenly watching the movements of CM Siddaramaiah’s close associates and relatives, including a cabinet minister in connection with the MUDA scam.

Sources further said that there is a possibility of the ED conducting raids across the state on offices and residences of close associates of CM Siddaramaiah. The ED has also gathered information on bank accounts and financial transactions of CM Siddaramaiah and his associates.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Monday registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), equivalent to an FIR by the police, against CM Siddaramaiah over the alleged irregularities in the allotment of 14 sites to his wife Parvathi B.M. by the Mysore Urban Development Authority. The ED registered the case taking cognisance of the FIR registered against the Chief Minister by the Lokayukta police on September 27.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Lokayukta probing the MUDA case has also expedited the probe. The sleuths led by Mysuru Lokayukta SP T.J. Udesh have visited the controversial land on the outskirts of Mysuru city. The petitioner, Snehamayi Krishna, also accompanied the team.

The move of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s wife to return 14 sites allotted by the MUDA to her has triggered a debate. BJP MLA from Mysuru T.S. Srivatsa stated on Tuesday that the move of CM’s wife is not acceptable. "The two commissioners who colluded in the MUDA scam are roaming freely even today," he said.

"CM Siddaramaiah first claimed that there was no scam at all. Later, he formed a commission and now there is an FIR against him. After committing the mistake, you offer to return the sale deed. The time is up. He will have to tender his resignation and I am sure he won’t be in the position until Dasara festivities," MLA T.S. Srivatsa stated.

T.J. Abraham, one of the petitioners in the MUDA case said, “I had demanded the MUDA commissioner to take back the allotted sites. He had written back saying the process would be initiated. They were waiting for the investigation report."

"CM Siddaramaiah has not approached the division bench or the Supreme Court to challenge the order against him because there is nothing to be challenged. Returning sites is not a big sacrifice. The Chief Minister has lost it," Abraham stated.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
