Bantwal, Feb 27: Various political parties keeping aside their political differences joined hands together to demand capital punishment to the guilty in Sowmya murder case.
The leaders staged a protest rally against Sowmya's brutal killing, on Wednesday outside Taluk Office on Bantwal. Sowmya was strangled to death after she refused to yield to the sexual advances by the accused. Her body was found in a pond at Balthila village.
Addressing the protesters, MLA Ramanath Rai said that Sowmya was killed in the broad daylight, which means that the values of the society has started to deteriorate and that the people now need to be alert. He demanded compensation from the government to the family members of the deceased.
Former MLA Rukmaiah Poojary said that the members of the legal fraternity must not extend legal aid to the accused in this case. “A request will be submitted to the Bar Association as well in this regard,” he said.
Congress leader Harikrishna Bantwal said that the Court of law should pronounce capital punishment to the accused, which was endorsed by JD(S) Youth wing and several other members of political parties.
After the rally, a delegation led by Congress leader Mamatha Gatti left to Tahshildar's office and submitted a memorandum to the Government through the Tahshildar.
Poojary hands over compensation to kin
Meanwhile, veteran Congress leader B Janardhan Poojary met the family members of Sowmya on Wednesday and consoled them for the loss. He handed over Rs 10,000 on his personal behalf and Rs 1.10 lakh collected from Congress partyworkers during a party meet to Sowmya's father Seetharam Serigar.
Poojary later speaking on the backdrop of the incident said that the police has to see to it that the accused gets strict punishment.
“This disease of raping and murdering young women has spread across the nation like cancer. Probably religious heads can play a vital role in changing the minds of the people by convincing them and teaching t hem to control such gruesome feelings. Men have to inculcate the habit of respecting women,” Poojary said.
