Mangalore, Mar 1: The Indian diaspora in the US is one of the most influential and vibrant communities, which has played a valuable role as a bridge between our cultures and has helped accelerate the transformation of US – India relations, said US Commercial Service Minister Counsellor for Commercial Affairs Judy Reinke.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of 'Experience America', an outreach programme by the US Consulate General in Chennai, at St Aloysius College here on Friday, she said that the best way to build strategic relationships between the two countries was a commitment towards building people-to-people relationships.

“The partnerships between our people and businesses stretch back for generations. Early linkages have blossomed into a robust two-way exchange of entrepreneurs, executives, professors, scientists and students that has benefitted both countries and come to serve as a model for others around the world. The US Consulate decided to organise Experience America 2013 in Mangalore as we believe making connections with Indian educational institutions, entrepreneurs, businesses and people is the right way to further connect our country. The EA programs will focus on higher education and partnerships with US universities for students and teachers through fellowships and grants, and the US Commercial Service tries to bring US universities closer to the country and the people through student and individual tours," she said.

Terming the three-day outreach programme as a celebration of India-US ties, she said that it was important to promote deeper and wider relationships and mutual understanding between the people of the two countries outside of capital cities, in places such as Mangalore and Manipal which have emerged as higher education and business hubs of South India.

Speaking on the occasion, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University Dr H S Ballal said that education had no physical barriers and students in India should be exposed to international education especially in developed countries in the Western world, which would help them gain better insight and broad-mindedness. “It is important that educational institutions in India have relationships with counterparts in foreign countries as it is our responsibility to groom students well so that they become better citizens of India tomorrow,” he said, adding that Manipal University had tie-ups with ten US universities.

Public Affairs Officer of the Chennai Consulate David J Gainer briefed the students on the programmes of the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), the US Commercial Service and the activities of 'Experience America'. Cultural Affairs Officer Shanna Surendra was present.

Vice principal of the college Fr Francis Almeida also spoke on the occasion.

The inauguration was followed by an inter-collegiate speech competition for college students on the topic 'India's emerging regional role in South and Central Asia'. Around 14 students from seven colleges took part in the competition, which was followed by a seminar on 'Higher Education in the US and student visas' in the auditorium.

The campus had catalogue display counters of nine US universities such as Hawaii Pacific University, West Virginia University, Central Michigan University and others, to entice students wishing to study abroad.

The black BMW, found damaged at the scene, prompted immediate action from fire and emergency service personnel who rushed to the spot and began combing the river. The atmosphere was tense as Panambur police confirmed the vehicle belonged to Mumtaz Ali, heightening fears for his safety.

Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal and former MLA Mohiuddin Bava arrived at the scene, joining the growing crowd of concerned locals gathered along the riverbank.

As search efforts continue, the community holds its breath, hoping for positive news in this difficult and emotional time.

Mangaluru, Sept 24: A blanket of gloom descended over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi as heavy rains battered the coastal Karnataka districts on Tuesday. Substantial rainfall has been drenching the region since Monday, intensifying as the day progressed.

In Dakshina Kannada, torrential downpours began early Tuesday, followed by overcast skies and humid conditions.

The showers persisted intermittently through the afternoon, with areas like Beltangady experiencing moderate rainfall, while Puttur and Bellare bore the brunt of heavier storms.

Overnight showers were reported in Bantwal, and Mangaluru city, along with its surrounding rural areas, witnessed a steady increase in rainfall, peaking by the evening.

After a brief respite, the return of intense rainfall has brought a welcome drop in temperatures. In Udupi, Karkala, Udupi city, Kundapur, and Hebri taluks all faced substantial rains throughout the day, continuing from late Sunday night.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the coastal districts, predicting more heavy rainfall in the coming hours.

A yellow alert has been placed for Wednesday, signaling the likelihood of additional downpours. Fishermen have been cautioned to remain vigilant, as the possibility of strong winds looms over the coastal waters.

Mysuru, Oct 1: The Karnataka Lokayukta team on Tuesday arrived at the disputed plot in Mysuru and began investigation into the MUDA case against CM Siddaramaiah and his wife, news agency ANI reported. Snehamayi Krishna, the complainant in the case was also present with the team.

Sources stated that ED sleuths might issue a notice to CM Siddaramaiah at any time and issue summons to him for questioning. The sleuths are also keenly watching the movements of CM Siddaramaiah’s close associates and relatives, including a cabinet minister in connection with the MUDA scam.

Sources further said that there is a possibility of the ED conducting raids across the state on offices and residences of close associates of CM Siddaramaiah. The ED has also gathered information on bank accounts and financial transactions of CM Siddaramaiah and his associates.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Monday registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), equivalent to an FIR by the police, against CM Siddaramaiah over the alleged irregularities in the allotment of 14 sites to his wife Parvathi B.M. by the Mysore Urban Development Authority. The ED registered the case taking cognisance of the FIR registered against the Chief Minister by the Lokayukta police on September 27.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Lokayukta probing the MUDA case has also expedited the probe. The sleuths led by Mysuru Lokayukta SP T.J. Udesh have visited the controversial land on the outskirts of Mysuru city. The petitioner, Snehamayi Krishna, also accompanied the team.

The move of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s wife to return 14 sites allotted by the MUDA to her has triggered a debate. BJP MLA from Mysuru T.S. Srivatsa stated on Tuesday that the move of CM’s wife is not acceptable. "The two commissioners who colluded in the MUDA scam are roaming freely even today," he said.

"CM Siddaramaiah first claimed that there was no scam at all. Later, he formed a commission and now there is an FIR against him. After committing the mistake, you offer to return the sale deed. The time is up. He will have to tender his resignation and I am sure he won’t be in the position until Dasara festivities," MLA T.S. Srivatsa stated.

T.J. Abraham, one of the petitioners in the MUDA case said, “I had demanded the MUDA commissioner to take back the allotted sites. He had written back saying the process would be initiated. They were waiting for the investigation report."

"CM Siddaramaiah has not approached the division bench or the Supreme Court to challenge the order against him because there is nothing to be challenged. Returning sites is not a big sacrifice. The Chief Minister has lost it," Abraham stated.
