Mangalore, Mar 1: Friday afternoon was a day to showcase creativity and artistic skills of children with special needs. Dabbling vibrant colours on white sheets with enthusiasm, these children rightfully proved that they are no less competent than any 'normal' school-going kids.

Close to 50 children from four special schools across the city of Mangalore brought colours to life in 'Splash' – a colouring competition for differently-abled, organised by the Department of Mass Communication of St Aloysius College Mangalore, in collaboration with Centre for Integrated Learning (CIL) and Lions Club Mangalore, at Lions Seva Mandir here in the city. The participating children came from Chetana Child Development Centre in Car Street, St Agnes Special School in Bendoor, SDM Mangala Jyothi Integrated School in Vamanjoor and Saanidhya Residential School and Training Centre in Shaktinagar.

Inaugurating the painting competition, founder-president of White Doves Corrine Rasquinha said that she was glad and thrilled to be a part of the competition with a difference. President of Lions Club Mangalore K Aravinda Rao, Secretary Nagaraj Sharma, treasurer Raghuveer Rao, executive director of CIL Sachita Nandagopal and lecturer Laxmi Shenoy were present during the inauguration.

The drawings were judged by Prakash Shenoy, Girish and Vigen Shenoy. In the Under 12 category, Harshit, Suchith and Soumya from Mangala Jyothi School bagged the first, second and third places respectively. In the Above 12 category, Abhishek and Ashraf from Mangala Jyothi School stood first and second in the competition, while Mohammed Ashriq from St Agnes School stood third. Participation certificates were given to all.

Student co-ordinators Anjali Rao and Kiran Shenoy from St Aloysius College said that the event, along with others previously organised, was part of their corporate affairs project during their course work.

The colouring sheets and crayons for the children in the competition were sponsored by Bharath Bookmark Store in Mangalore.

Mangaluru, Sept 24: A blanket of gloom descended over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi as heavy rains battered the coastal Karnataka districts on Tuesday. Substantial rainfall has been drenching the region since Monday, intensifying as the day progressed.

In Dakshina Kannada, torrential downpours began early Tuesday, followed by overcast skies and humid conditions.

The showers persisted intermittently through the afternoon, with areas like Beltangady experiencing moderate rainfall, while Puttur and Bellare bore the brunt of heavier storms.

Overnight showers were reported in Bantwal, and Mangaluru city, along with its surrounding rural areas, witnessed a steady increase in rainfall, peaking by the evening.

After a brief respite, the return of intense rainfall has brought a welcome drop in temperatures. In Udupi, Karkala, Udupi city, Kundapur, and Hebri taluks all faced substantial rains throughout the day, continuing from late Sunday night.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the coastal districts, predicting more heavy rainfall in the coming hours.

A yellow alert has been placed for Wednesday, signaling the likelihood of additional downpours. Fishermen have been cautioned to remain vigilant, as the possibility of strong winds looms over the coastal waters.
