Mangalore, Mar 3: The Department of Mass Communication, in association with the Primary Health Centre, Urwa, organised “Mahileyaralli Suchitvathe: A door- to- door Sanitary hygiene awareness drive for women” on March 2 with an aim to bring about awareness on Sanitary hygiene and the stereotypical thinking of the Menstrual Cycle as being impure among woman.
The awareness drive which began at the Our Lady of Fatima Church hall was inaugurated by Sharmila, Couselor at Mana Shanti and guest lecturer at Roshni Nilaya College and Dr. Jacinta D'souza, Assistant Professor of the Anatomy Department, Karnataka Ayurveda Medical College (KAMC). Addressing the women folks from Bengre village, Dr. Jacinta stressed on the need for Sanitation during the menstrual period and the cleanliness procedures they should follow.
Ms. Sharmila enlightened them on the socially related stereotypical aspects. The drive proceeded with speakers and the volunteers from KAMC conducting a door- to- door awareness in Bengre village. Ms. Sharmila emphasized on the fact that the menstrual cycle was a normal functioning of the female body and had nothing to do with impurity.
The team covered sixty houses interacting with women and finding out about their problems.
Pamphlets on menstrual hygiene were distributed among the villagers of Bengre and the visitors at Thanirbhavi beach.
