Mangalore, Mar 5: The district unit of Janata Dal (Secular) announced the formation of H D K Yuvasene in Dakshina Kannada on Tuesday, with a view to unite and organise the youth of the district and imbibe leadership qualities in them.

Dakshina Kannada JD(S) core committee president A Sadananda Shetty announced that Pradeep Prabhakar from Puttur had been appointed as the district president of the newly-formed wing of JD(S).

Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, Pradeep Prabhakar said that the Yuvasene was formed as per the recommendation of JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy, in order to unite the youth of all communities in the district and empower them. “Few groups and organisations have been trying to disrupt the communal harmony in the district which was previously known for its peace-loving attitude. The primary purpose of the Yuvasene is to fight against forces which create communal conflicts and disturb the peace in the name of religion. The Yuvasene will work against such forces at all levels,” he said, and added that students would also be included in the youth wing.

“Groups of students will be formed under the Yuvasene in college levels, in order to prevent students and youth from getting involved in anti-communal activities. Political parties such as BJP and Congress have been pulling the youth force to bring communal disturbance in the city and the district. The idea is remove communal disharmony from the roots. The Yuvasene will neither encourage nor support communally-motivated activities in the district,” he said.

He further stated that a programme would be held in the coming days to formally launch the new wing for youth.

JD(S) district general secretary Vasanth Poojary and other JD(S) leaders such as Gopalkrishna Attavar, Shrinath Rai, Sandeep Salian were present among others.

However, the absence of prominent members such state vice-president B Nagaraj Shetty, M B Sadashiv, M G Hegde and Sharan Gowda was conspicuous on the occasion. Mr Prabhakar said that the absent members were engaged in preparations for the upcoming ULB elections on Thursday.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
