Mangalore, Mar 30: Bills like Lokpal are not the answer to the widespread corruption in our society. It is the nurturing of children and creation of an entirely new generation of corruption free society that needs to be worked on, said Prof. B M Hegde, Former Vice Chancellor, Manipal University.
He was speaking after releasing the book 'Corruption: India's Painful Crawl to Lokpal' authored by senior writer John B Monteiro in Mangalore on Saturday.
Corruption exists across the globe but the proportion in which it has become a part of Indian society makes it impossible for the problem to be tackled merely by introducing bills like the Lokpal, Prof. Hegde said, and stressed on the need to educate the next generation and making them corruption free.
“Corruption is a negative thought. The seeds are sown right in our school level where we have the grade system to judge children. When you have such a system, you sow the seed of greed in the minds of the children whereby they think they need to be better than the others. We have to go back to our ancient education system where no grade system was in practice. You cannot do anything about corruption at the moment. This generation has to pass and it is the next generation that we need to focus on and educate them in such a way that this desire for greed and being better than others does not find place in their thinking”, Mr. Hegde said.
Equal pay is another issue that needs to be addressed, Mr. Hegde said. “When there are three policemen who have varying salaries, it is but natural that the ones getting lower salaries resort to corruption and other means to earn more and prove that they are better. When there is equal pay, the problem won't arise at all”, he said.
Sharing his thoughts, Mr. Monteiro said that the book has been published by Strategic Book Publishing Co. of USA, the copies of which will be availbale in book stores of Mangalore besides being available online as well.
Fr. Swebert D'Silva, Principal, St Aloysius College, Mangalore, was also present.
