Mangalore, Apr 2: The BJP national leadership is keenly following political developments in Karnataka and values the upcoming state Assembly elections with the same focus and intensity as the scheduled 2014 Lok Sabha elections, said D V Sadananda Gowda, former Chief Minister.
He was speaking at a programme organized by the district BJP unit in Mangalore on Tuesday to felicitate him on being appointed as the BJP's national Vice-President.
The national Vice President appointment is an indicator that the national party leadership is concerned about the party's future in Karnataka, Mr. Gowda said.
“The national leaders of our party are closely watching developments in Karnataka. The upcoming Assembly elections are as important to the party High Command as the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The focus is on getting re-elected to power in Karnataka. Leaders at the national- level have expectations from the party in the state after having formed the first BJP led government in South India. Maintaining that hold is a challenge all the same”, Mr. Gowda said.
Admitting that there were mistakes committed in the “first three years” of BJP government in Karnataka, Mr. Gowda said that the administration that ensued under him and Jagadish Shettar was in line with the expectations of the party as well as the people of the state. “In my 11 month tenure as CM, there wasn't a single blot of corruption, denotification or any other form of taint. Mr. Shettar has carried the good work forward. Unfortunately, our development works like 'Sakaala' are not being discussed”, Mr. Gowda said, while claiming that the BJP government had implemented 80% of the promises it made in its election manifesto.
Stating that inclusion of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi into the patry's parliamentary committee is a step in the right direction, Mr. Gowda said that Mr. Modi is the hope of our country and assured that he will take part in campaigning for the party in Karnataka for the Assembly polls soon.
Expressing his gratitude to party workers and colleagues in the district, Mr. Gowda said that without their help and support, it would have been impossible to climb greater heights and become national Vice-President of the party. “In a human pyramid, although the one who breaks the pot by climbing at the top of everyone is regarded as the hero, it is the ones who form the base of that pyramid who actually run the show. Without the support of party activists, I would never have been able to go this far. Even though I have been given a national-level post by the party, I assure you that I will continue to be a Dakshina Kannada boy”, Mr. Gowda said.
N Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP and State Vice-President of the party, MLAs Krishna J Palemar and Mallika Prasad, Padmanabha Kottary, District President of the party, were among those present.
