Mangalore, Apr 3: The historic Mangalore-Dammam direct flight with 160 passengers onboard finally took off from Mangalore International Airport at 5 p.m. (IST) on Wednesday.

A festive atmosphere prevailed at the Mangalore International Airport as for the first time in its six decades of history, overwhelmed passengers from Mangalore are directly flying to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia today.

Passengers who boarded the Mangalore-Dammam inaugural flight from the airport in Bajpe were enthusiastic over the direct flight which could save trouble for the large number of expatriates from the region of coastal Karnataka working in Saudi Arabia. As many as 59 passengers from Mangalore were on board the flight which took off at 5 p.m. today, airline officials said. The 160-seat capacity flight began its journey from Calicut with passengers from Kerala at 3 p.m. and landed at Mangalore at 4 p.m.

Udupi-Chikmagalur MP K Jayaprakash Hegde, Mangalore MLA U T Khader and Chairman of Coastaldigest.com Mohammed Asif were among those who were on-board. Deputy General Manager of Air India Express, Mangalore Melwin D'Silva presented the boarding cards to the dignitaries and welcomed them on the inaugural flight.

Speaking to mediapersons, Mr Khader said that a large population from Mangalore and other parts of coastal Karnataka, used to frequent Dammam, Jubail, Riyadh and other parts of Saudi Arabia for work-related purposes. The long-standing demand of a direct flight linking Mangalore with the major cities of Saudi Arabia has been fulfilled today, due to the continuous efforts of Amaco chairman Mohammed Asif and members of various organisations, who met several prominent people such as Praful Patel, S M Krishna, Veerappa Moily, Oscar Fernandes and several others urging them to facilitate a direct flight between Mangalore and Saudi Arabia. The flight will also serve as an opportunity for growth for Mangalore International Airport, he said, wishing that more flights would become operational from Mangalore to Saudi in the coming days.

Mr Hegde and Mr Khader will be visiting Saudi to participate in the Coastaldigest.com gala to be held in Jubail on Thursday evening.

Airport Director T Radhakrishnan, Air India Express of Mangalore Melwin D'Silva and airport manager for Air India Sudhir Bhat accorded a warm welcome to all the passengers checking-in for the Air India Express flight IXE 385, which landed in Mangalore from Calicut.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has made all arrangements for the smooth operation of arrival and departure of flights from Dammam. Mangalore is now connected with Dammam in Saudi Arabia with the commencement of flight IXE 385. Air India Express will operate flights twice a week from Mangalore to Dammam on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the return flight leaving Dammam on Thursday and Sunday.

Passengers thrilled

The air link to Dammam was a long-awaited connection by the local travelers and NRIs. Before the flight took off from Mangalore as per schedule, many eager passengers shared their enthusiasm and appreciation for the flight which was made possible through the efforts and dedication of several people.

Visibly happy, Bajpe Zakariya, a prominent NRI industrialist in Saudi Arabia, who checked-in along with his family said that he was delighted over the commencement of the direct flight. “People and representatives of various organizations have worked hard for the past three years for the commencement of this flight and today the dream has come true. This flight will be useful for the people of entire coastal Karnataka, especially Dakshina Kannada, since a large number of people from this area are employed in Saudi, said Mr Zakariya, who employs over 250 Indians in the Kingdom.

Ali, another passenger said that he was eagerly waiting for this day. “I am feeling happy. I had never imagined that I will directly fly to Dammam from Mangalore so soon,” said Ali who has been working in Saudi Arabia for more than a decade.

Naveena D'Souza, hailing from Udupi, visits Saudi once every six months to avoid the expiry of her Saudi visa. Travelling with her son and daughter, she told Coastaldigest.com that she was very happy about the direct flight. “Since me and my children hold Saudi Arabian visas, visiting the Kingdom every six months is inevitable. So far, it was a hassle travelling to Saudi each time, since it would always result in wastage of time. The direct flight will make our journey easy now,” she said, smiling.

Her son, Flanish said that prior to the direct flight, they had to travel to Saudi via Mumbai, Bahrain or Dubai, which would make it difficult for them. A lot of time would be wasted waiting in the airports and the duration between two different connecting flights would be very less, making it hard sometimes to catch the next flight on time. The direct flight will help us reach our destination faster, so now, we can directly fly to Dammam in less than five hours without trouble or wasting much time, he said.

A youngster Afzal, travelling with his family said that the direct flight made their journey stress-free.

Chief Operating Officer of Air India Express Ansbert D'Souza conveyed his warm wishes to the passengers travelling on the flight and his gratitude to the people of Mangalore for their support.

Bengaluru: In a boost to the ruling Congress in Karnataka, the party on Saturday swept the by-polls to three Assembly segments, causing a major setback to the BJP-JD(S) alliance in the state.

The Congress has retained Sandur, the seat considered to be its strong hold, and has also bagged Shiggaon and Channapatna segments, which were earlier held by BJP and JD(S) respectively.

The November 13 by-polls to Sandur, Shiggaon and Channapatna Assembly segments had witnessed a fierce fight between the ruling Congress and a combative BJP-JD(S) alliance.

The by-polls to Sandur, Shiggaon and Channapatna were necessitated as the seats fell vacant following the election of their respective representatives -- E Tukaram of Congress, former CM Basavaraj Bommai of BJP, and Union Minister Kumaraswamy of JD(S) to Lok Sabha in May elections.

The by-polls witnessed a straight fight between the ruling Congress and BJP in Sandur and Shiggaon segments, while in Channapatna, JD(S) which is part of the NDA alliance took on the grand old party.

Congress' C P Yogeeshwara won the Channapatna segment, defeating JD(S) candidate and Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy, by a margin of 25,413 votes.

Former CM Basavaraj Bommai's son Bharath Bommai of BJP faced defeat against Congress' Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan in Shiggaon Assembly segment by a margin of 13,448 votes.

In Sandur, Congress candidate E Annapoorna, the wife of Bellary MP E Tukaram, won the seat vacated by her husband, by a margin of 9,649 votes.

Congress' win in the by-poll is seen as an endorsement of both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar's leadership, and the government's programmes, especially the five guarantee schemes.

Nikhil Kumaraswamy and Bharath Bommai, the third generation of Gowda and Bommai family respectively, who contested this bypolls, have lost. Their fathers and grandfathers had served as Karnataka's Chief Ministers in the past.

While for Bharath Bommai this was his electoral debut, for Nikhil it was his third electoral loss.

Among the three segments, Channapatna was considered to be a high profile battle, where the contest was between C P Yogeeshwara and actor-turned-politician Nikhil Kumaraswamy.

A five-time MLA from the segment and a former Minister, Yogeeshwara had joined the Congress after quitting BJP ahead of nomination.

There were plans to field Yogeeshwara on a JD(S) ticket, but he was not interested in it, and instead wanted Kumaraswamy to support him as BJP candidate. This was not acceptable to Kumaraswamy and his party, following which Yogeeshwara jumped ship.

However, Kumaraswamy had subsequently said he had agreed to Yogeeshwara contesting from BJP, and despite that he jumped ship to Congress, under the influence of Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and his brother and former MP D K Suresh.

Nikhil had faced defeat in 2019 Lok Sabha and 2023 Assembly polls. It is seen as a setback for Kumaraswamy too, as he could not ensure son's win from the Channapatna, the seat he had twice represented in the past.

Congress' win is crucial for Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress chief and his brother Suresh to strengthen their position in their home district of Ramanagara, a Vokkaliga heartland.

In Shiggaon, BJP's Bharath Bommai, son of Basavaraj Bommai lost against Congress' Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, who had faced defeat against the former Chief Minister in the 2023 Assembly polls.

Initially, former MLA Syed Azeempeer Khadri, a Congress' ticket aspirant, had raised a banner of revolt in Shiggaon, by filing his nomination as an independent, but later withdrew after intervention by party leadership.

In Sandur, Bellary MP Tukaram's wife E Annapurna of Congress won from the seat vacated by her husband, against BJP ST Morcha president Bangaru Hanumanthu, who is considered close to party leader and former mining barron G Janardhan Reddy.

Sandur is a Congress' bastion, and Tukaram had represented it four times.

Congress winning the by-polls is seen as "crucial" for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to assert himself , amid demands for his resignation following charges against him in the MUDA site allotment case.

There were also behind-the-scenes political activities within the ruling Congress earlier this year, with a few ministers in his Cabinet holding closed door meetings, fueling speculation about leadership change. But such activities came to a halt following instructions from the party high command.

It is equally important for Shivakumar, who has not shied away from openly expressing his Chief Ministerial ambitions, amid speculations over "rotational Chief Minister formula," according to which he will become CM after two-and-half years (in this govt's five years tenure), but they have not been officially confirmed by the party.

The defeat in this by-poll is seen as a setback for state BJP President Vijayendra, who has been facing intense criticism and opposition from a section within the party, who have raised a banner of revolt against his leadership accusing him and his father, veteran leader B S Yediyurappa of "adjustment politics".

Udupi, Nov 11: The Karkala town police in Udupi have arrested Krishna Naik, the sculptor responsible for installing a 33-foot Parashurama statue at Umikkal Hill in Bailur, Karkala taluk.

Naik, the owner of Krish Art World and a resident of Bengaluru's Visvesvaraya Layout, was apprehended in Mahe, part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, for allegedly substituting a look-alike statue in place of a genuine bronze figure at the Parashurama Theme Park in Karkala.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Dr. Arun K confirmed the arrest, stating that Naik faces charges under Sections 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.

This legal action followed a complaint lodged in June by Krishna Shetty, a resident of Nallur village, Karkala. Shetty claimed that Naik had received a payment of ₹1,25,50,000 from Udupi Nirmithi Kendra for the installation of a bronze Parashurama statue. However, Naik allegedly deceived the government by installing a replica instead.

The statue was unveiled on January 27, 2023, by then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. Current Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has since ordered a CID investigation to probe deeper into the alleged fraud surrounding the statue's installation at the theme park.
