The incident occurred when Shivarajappa (28), hailing from Honnali in Davanagere district, was engaged in checking vehicles passing through Bappanadu check-post.
Sources from Mulky police station said that the victim and two other coastal security policemen were working night shift.
Shivarajappa was lonely checking the vehicles moving towards Mangalore from Udupi, while the other two were checking vehicles coming from opposition direction.
It is said that between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m when Shivarajappa gave signal to a lorry driver to stop near the check-post, the lorry knocked him down and sped away. When the other two policemen rushed, Shivarajappa was lying in a pool of blood. They even could not note down the number of the lorry. The body was shifted to Srinivas Hospital.
Rajappa, who joined the police department in 2008, was married to a teacher last year. It is learnt that his wife is pregnant.
Mulky police registered a case and investigations are on.
