Udupi, Apr 7: Congress candidate for Udupi Assembly constituency Pramod Madhwaraj and South Canara District Central Cooperative (SCDCC) Bank chairman M N Rajendra Kumar have been booked for violating the election code of conduct.
Udupi Deputy Commissioner M T Reju, who is also election officer for the district, said a complaint had been received about poll code violation during the Udupi District Congress Convention on March 31.
Mr Reju said that both of them had announced that self-help groups in villages where Congress would emerge victorious would be presented with a gold coin. "This amounted to poll inducement and code violation," he said.
Cases have been booked under Section 123 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and also IPC Section 171B against both after investigation conducted by Udupi tahsildar through the Election Poll Code and Implementation Team.
In another case, a vernacular daily has been accused of poll code violation by publishing an advertisement on four days. Mr Reju has sought explanation from the authorities within a month as to why recommendation for action should not be initiated through Election Commission and the Registrar of Newspapers of India.
