Power cut: KRRS pickets Mescom office

Mangalore, Apr 8: Irked members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) laid siege on the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) in the city on Monday demanding uninterrupted power supply to the undivided Dakshina Kannada district and also to get a reply from the MESCOM MD for the false cases registered by the Company against farmers.

The protestors shouted slogans against S Sumanth, Managing Director of MESCOM, and demanded him to confront them.

False case

When Mr.Sumanth appeared before the protestors, Vijay Hegde, State Vice-President, KRRS, demanded an answer from Mr. Sumanth as to why false police cases have been registered against farmers by MESCOM officials. Citing the case of farmer Roopesh Rai from Kadaba who was put behind bars for four days due to the alleged involvement of MESCOM official Sheshappa Poojary, Mr. Hegde lambasted the company MD for being irresponsible and insensitive towards the problems of the farmers.

Mr. Sumanth, after a long argument with the farmer representatives, finally agreed to order an enquiry against the official concerned, report of which would be submitted to him within 24 hours.

Power supply

Stating that farmers were happy with the power supply the district would earlier receive from Jog, Mr. Hegde said that power from Jog has now been diverted to Shimoga, Hasan and Bangalore and the DK district has been deprived of adequate power supply. MESCOM's policies have been responsible for this situation, he said and asked the MD to take steps to resume electricity supply from Jog to DK and Udupi districts. Mr. Sumanth on the other hand said that the decision to divert power supply from Jog to Bangalore and other parts of the state had been taken long back and that he cannot do anything in this regard. The farmers however maintained that they oppose the UPCL power project as it is “illegal”.

Farmers present in the protest also alleged MESCOM officials of depriving them of electricity supply, disconnecting power supply to their pumpsets, load shedding at the time of examinations besides others. Mr. Sumanth assured them that he will consider each of their demands and keep load shedding in the district to the minimal.

Lokayukta to probe Siddaramaiah as special court orders filing of FIR in MUDA case

In a significant development, a special court tasked with handling cases against Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MP/MLAs) has ordered that a First Information Report (FIR) be filed regarding the Muda case.

Additionally, the Karnataka Lokayukta, which is an anti-corruption body, has been tasked with investigating allegations against Siddaramaiah, who is reportedly involved in the case.

The court instructed the Lokayukta (an anti-corruption authority) to provide a report within three months. It also ordered the relevant authorities to file a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the case.

Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat issued the directive, compelling the Mysuru Lokayukta police to commence an investigation following a formal complaint lodged by Snehamayi Krishna.

The Karnataka Lokayukta in Mysuru is required to carry out the investigation under Section 156 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code, which mandates the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).

Rains lash Dakshina Kannada and Udupi amidst red alert

Mangaluru, Sept 24: A blanket of gloom descended over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi as heavy rains battered the coastal Karnataka districts on Tuesday. Substantial rainfall has been drenching the region since Monday, intensifying as the day progressed.

In Dakshina Kannada, torrential downpours began early Tuesday, followed by overcast skies and humid conditions.

The showers persisted intermittently through the afternoon, with areas like Beltangady experiencing moderate rainfall, while Puttur and Bellare bore the brunt of heavier storms.

Overnight showers were reported in Bantwal, and Mangaluru city, along with its surrounding rural areas, witnessed a steady increase in rainfall, peaking by the evening.

After a brief respite, the return of intense rainfall has brought a welcome drop in temperatures. In Udupi, Karkala, Udupi city, Kundapur, and Hebri taluks all faced substantial rains throughout the day, continuing from late Sunday night.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the coastal districts, predicting more heavy rainfall in the coming hours.

A yellow alert has been placed for Wednesday, signaling the likelihood of additional downpours. Fishermen have been cautioned to remain vigilant, as the possibility of strong winds looms over the coastal waters.
