Mangalore, Apr 14: BA Moideen Bava, Dakshina Kannada District Congress Minorities Cell President, who had been defeated by BJP's Krishna J. Palemar in the 2008 assembly elections, has reportedly secured Congress ticket from Mangalore North Constituency once again.
More than a dozen Congress leaders including former MLA Vijaykumar Shetty, Kripa Alva and Zilla Panchayat member Mamata Gatti, former KPCC Secretary Mohammed Badruddin, and former mayor Shashidhar Hegde were in race for the Congress ticket from this prestigious constituency.
The party's decision to give one more opportunity to the candidate with a minority tag, has once again exacerbated the internal rift in Dakshina Kannada district Congress Committee, with few of followers of former MLA Vijayakumar Shetty threatening to quit the party.
It is learnt that Rajya Sabha member and AICC general secretary Oscar Fernades played a crucial role in issuing ticket to Mr Bava, amidst Congress veteran B Janardhan Poojary's strong support to Mr Shetty.
It could be recalled here that the supporters of Mr Bava and Mr Shetty had resorted to blows at Mangalore International Airport last Sunday.
