The blast has caused more head ache for police department amidst the on-going preparations for May 5 Karnataka Assembly polls.
A senior police official said personnel have been "alerted" and there is extra vigil across coastal Karnataka.
Special checking of in-bound and out-bound vehicles was reportedly carried out for some time in Mangalore and Udupi.
"We have deployed personnel across the city. There is nothing to panic," said a police officer in Mangalore City Commissionerate.
Police have also stepped up vigil at railway stations, bus stands, airport, markets, malls and other crowded places, he said.
IRB, BSF take position
Meanwhile, Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) from Sikkim and 149th battalion of Coimbatore regiment of Border Security Force have taken position in sensitive areas of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts respectively.
The IRB soldiers had arrived in Mangalore on Tuesday to ensure security during elections. Official sources said that around 360 soldiers from IRB have been deployed in Mangalore and other parts of Dakshina Kannada district.
In Udupi town as many as 137 soldiers have been deployed, said the Regiment Assistant Commandant J S Chauhan.
