Speaking at the formal inaugural ceremony, Dr. Heggade said that it is heartening to see better healthcare facilities becoming more and more accessible to people, especially the rural populace.
“Earlier due to lack of proper diagnosis, mortality rates were high. Today, thanks to better healthcare facilities, longevity of life in general has increased in the country. Today, the poorest of the poor and people from the remotest of places know that hospital is the place to go in case of health issues, contrary to beliefs of curses and 'doshas' of the past. However, it is the duty of the doctors and medical professionals in hospitals to guide them to the right specialists”, Dr. Heggade said.
Stating that AJ Hospital has acted as a perfect model for medical education, Dr. Heggade said that a hospital must come into picture first followed by medical college, instead of the case being vice versa. “When you have an established hospital in place, it allows students of your medical college to get the right kind of exposure to various departments of medicine and treatment”, Dr. Heggade said.
The Dharmasthala spiritual head opined that more insurance companies must come forward with insurance schemes with hospitals such as AJ, so that the poor and needy are served better and their cancer treatment expenses are taken care of in a better way.
Dr. Heggade on the occasion handed over the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) certificate to A J Shetty, Chairman, AJ Hopital and Research Centre.
Facilities at the AJ Cancer Institute include high end Linear Accelerator machine with triple photon and six electron energies along with IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) and IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy), a High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachtherapy system, computerized treatment planning system for both teletherapy and brachtherapy, patient immobilization devices to deliver precise and accurate radiation therapy among others.
