Speaking on the occasion, senior Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary said that more and more people are embracing the Congress party all over the state which is an indication of the popular “wave” favouring the party.
“People have decided that they need a change of power as they are fed up of the BJP's failure in governance. This pro-Congress wave in the state is even prompting activists of other parties to join our party”, Mr. Poojary said.
The Congress is also welcoming one and all from different quarters into the party as “each vote counts”, Mr. Poojary said. “In Byndoor, J S Achar had lost elections once with a margin of one vote. That defeat had brought tears in his eyes and hurt party workers big time. There have been instances of candidates losing Lok Sabha elections with margins of 6 votes and 9 votes. Hence, each vote counts. The Congress is welcoming people from other parties keeping in mind the votes they and their followers will bring with them”, he said.
The desperation to get as many votes as possible was evident in Mr. Poojary's concern to regain Mangalore (South) and Surathkal constituencies. “We have not won in Mangalore (South) in the last two decades. In Surathkal too, we have been missing out since the last 15 years. We have to regain both these grounds and every vote is important to achieve this goal”, Mr. Poojary said.
Speaking to media persons after the programme, Mr. Fernandes said that the party has already released its manifesto and is bothered about implementing its promises rather than targeting the BJP over its election manifesto content. Stress has been given for empowerment of poor, farmers, women and youth, Mr. Fernandes said.
The senior leader also said that by regaining power, the Congress intends to bring back communal harmony in the region which he claimed had been missing in the BJP government's tenure.
