Mangalore, Apr 29: Even while the political leaders of the state are actively engaged in campaigning for elections for their respective parties, this BJP leader and president of Beary Sahitya Academy Rahim Uchil has been busy preparing for his B.A. degree examinations, this summer.

The B.A. degree examinations conducted by Karnataka State Open University have already commenced.

A year ago, Rahim Uchil had fortuitously escaped a murder bid at the Academy office in Mangalore, although he was gravely injured. He lost one of his fingers in the assault, while another one has been rendered non-functional. He writes the examination with the help of three fingers, while 2 gunmen stand on guard outside his examination hall.

“Despite being the president of Beary Academy, I lamented that I did not have a degree and longed for one. I'm appearing for an examination after a span of 20 years. Although I had paid the examination fees last year, I was unable to appear for them owing to the assault on me. There was also the question of security. I wish to pursue M.A. course after obtaining my degree,” said Rahim Uchil.

Having lost his father at the age of 4 years, his family suffered from financial problems. “Now, I want to obtain a degree for myself. There are a lot of books on literature among the collection of books at home. Owing to lack of time, I was unable to read them. Now, I have been reading historical books right from the Stone Age to the glorious period of the Mauryas. By reading them, I will at least gain a lot of historical and political knowledge,” he says.

He also says that his writing has worsened. “However, if I fail in any subject, it would be a result of having not studied well. What I have written is good enough,” he said.

He discloses that he is extremely glad to see several labourers, government employees, pregnant women along with their husbands and several Muslim religious leaders appearing for exams.

Campaigning

“Party leaders had summoned me to help with election campaigning. However, because of my academic commitments and having not fully recovered, I have been excused this time. Moreover, I do not want the Beary community to be disgruntled for participating in campaigning despite being the president of the academy,” said Mr Uchil.
