Mangalore, May 8: The BJP's failed governance at the state had offered splendid victory to Congress candidates in most of the constituencies across the state and coastal district of Dakshina Kannada is no exception.

Whether the candidates earned it or the failure of the BJP elevated them to victorious position itself is debatable. However, the winners are basking over their victory and here are some words from them.

U T Khader, Cong - Mangalore

“This is a thrashing given to the communal forces by the people. There was a systematic plan hatched for my defeat but people voted for me beyond my expectations.

Most of those candidates who contested against me were BJP sponsored. The SDPI also resorted to an approach that was in favour of the BJP.

If they really are anti-communal they should not have contested against a candidate from minority community. Ultimately, it is pleasing to see that in spite of all the propaganda against me, my efforts and achievements as a people's representative have bore fruit.”

Moideen Bawa, Cong - Mangalore North

“Extremely proud of our party activists who have helped me break the BJP hold on Surathkal constituency which they had held on firmly for 10-12 years.

This is a victory of the Congress party workers. I was confident of the victory in spite of media surveys predicting that Palemar will continue holding sway over the region.

Voters are intelligent enough and they have with their mandate proved otherwise. I wish to work for the people of Surathkal and there are a lot of challenges up ahead. Besides providing my people with the basic facilities, I intend to set up an international stadium in our constituency in addition to enhancing industrial growth and fisheries port.”

J R Lobo, Cong - Mangalore South

“This is a victory of the Congress party and the party workers. The victory has brought with it a huge responsibility and I will put my best foot forward in fulfilling this responsibility.

Whatever assurances we have made, we will try to fulfill them to the best of our ability and with utmost sincerity. We will try and turn Mangalore (South) into a model constituency.

People have taught an apt lesson to those who took law into their hands and misused the power machinery. They have voted for a peaceful society. As far as we are concerned, we will make sure that law and order is given as much attention as development.”

B Ramanath Rai, Cong - Bantwal

Very happy to have achieved this victory… The party had faith in me and it feels nice to have performed well. I am indebted to the people for giving me another opportunity to serve them.

As a district Congress President, the performance of our party has given me immense joy. I had been maintaining that we will sweep all 8 constituencies and we have very nearly done it. We have not breached BJP's fort. Coastal districts were always the strongholds of the Congress but then slipped into BJP's hands. Now we have gone back to owning the coastal region.

People have voted for communal harmony and togetherness. They have voted against communalism. They have not only voted against BJP but also other forces which are harmful for society.

Vasanth Bangera, Cong - Belthangady

“I have been active in publc life for more than 40 years now and during these four decades I was always in touch with people and addressed their problems. Today, they have shown their faith in me by handing me over the electoral victory.

There was a lot of propaganda carried out against me in the days leading up to the election but people have not paid heed to it.

I will try to repose their faith by working for them with all sincerity and dedication. Providing electricity to each and every house in Belthangady is my priority which I am hopeful of accomplishing. The fact that our party will form government in the state will help in this regard.”

Abhayachandra Jain, Cong - Moodbidri

“In spite of a number of factors against me, people showed that they are on my side. The victory is an honour for me.

There are a lot of things that remain to be achieved in terms of developing Moodbidri constituency is concerned and I will continue working in that direction.

I have no aspirations to become a minister. The fact that our party has attained majority and is all set to form government itself is a matter of joy for us.

I will continue focusing on serving the people of my constituency and addressing their needs.”

Shakuntala Shetty, Cong - Puttur

“This is a joint effort. I would like to say this is Congress' victory rather than my personal victory. There is no question of my charisma working here. It was a party effort. I would however like to acknowledge the encouragement given by my political mentor Ram Bhat.

I intend to create a peaceful atmosphere in my constituency. It pains me when people say Puttur is a communally sensitive area. I will put in my best efforts to develop my constituency. People have seen my contribution in the past. I had brought funds for this region and worked for its betterment and they are aware of it.”

S Angara, BJP - Sullia

“My victory is an indication that Sullia did not fall prey to the anti-BJP wave. In spite of challenges and the anti-incumbency factor looming large, it is my work as an MLA that people took note of and voted for me.

Yes, the region remains underdeveloped but I cannot do much single handedly. The government has to grant funds”
