Stones pelted at Masjid; timely intervention averts unrest

Udupi, May 10: Miscreants pelted stones at a Masjid at Kaup Polipu in Udupi district in the wee hours of Friday, damaging the glass panes and walls of the building.

Sources present said that the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. in the morning on Thursday. Members of the community and the cleric, who were present inside the mosque at the time of the incident summoned the police.

As the news spread, a large crowd gathered at the spot after dawn.

Deputy Superintendent of Karkala sub-division Devaraju and team arrived at the spot and inspected the damage. Assuring the crowd of a fair probe, he ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.

Kaup MLA-elect Vinay Kumar Sorake, upon learning about the incident, visited the spot and also appealed to the public to maintain calm.

Directing the police to take immediate steps to nab the culprits, he requested the local committee members of the mosque not to politicize the issue.

Kaup circle inspector Shivanand Valekar, sub inspector Archana, crime sub inspector Rajendra Naik and team are investigating the matter.
