Mangalore, May 28: The pre-monsoon showers brought a sigh of relief to the people living in the twin coastal district, thereby relieving people momentarily from the scorching heat.
The showers that commenced last week witnessed some moderate rainfall, soothing the region. Tuesday morning began with an overcast sky, and as expected, proceeded to rain torrents over the cities of Mangalore and Udupi through the day.
Apart from the occasional May showers that considerably brought down the temperatures in the district last week, the continuous heavy downpour that was seen in Mangalore on Tuesday was an indicator that it was time to bring out the umbrellas, raincoats and water-proof jackets from their hibernation.
Even though the occasional cloudburst last week indicated similar weather in the coming days, more city-goers were caught unawares by the torrential rain, and had to wait out in order to avoid getting wet on their way to do their daily chores. Even those who came prepared seemed barely able to stay dry in the sheets of water that rained down.
The rains were welcomed by farmers and agriculturists in the district for it provided the much-needed irrigation for their crops.
However, the neglected storm-water drains came to the fore as silt had been collected in them, there are inevitable chances of artificial flooding taking place in several low-lying areas in and around the city if the rain continues.
As precautionary measures, de-silting of storm-water drains has already begun in several areas around the city by Mangalore City Corporation. However, since footpaths were not constructed after roads were concretised in the city, most of the rainwater flows along the sides of the roads, making it problematic the pedestrians in traversing along the roads.
In the month of May, Dakshina Kannada district has received 54.2 mm of rain (till Monday), which is drastically up from 15.3 mm of rain received in last May.
