Mangalore, Jun 12: The district court complex works which remained languished for over seven years are finally seeing completion. If all goes on fine, then the complex will be ready for inauguration by July and the legal proceedings that have been going on in clamped MCC building will be held in spacious new complex.

During a review meeting held by the district in-charge minister last year, the officials had informed that the works will be completed by December, which was not materialized for various reasons.

It may be recalled that on March 18, 2006, the then chief minister H D Kumaraswamy and High Court Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph had laid the foundation for the new court complex. It has been seven years since the work was started. During this course of time, the cost of the project too has shot up by many folds.

Phases

The project was planned in three phases. A sum of Rs 1.05 crore was released for the first phase of the project. From May 25, 2006 to May 25, 2007, half of the ground floor and the parking slot were completed using this amount.

A sum of Rs two crore was released under second phase. Utilising this amount the pending ground floor works, pending car parking work, elevators and electricity room were completed. The next floor work was started using the same amount.

A sum of Rs 18 crore was released in third phase using which all the six floors with 30 court halls were taken up. The work on sixth floor was completed recently. At present the laying of the roof tiles and painting works are in progress.

What is in?

Ground floor has two family courts. First floor has Principal Judge's court hall and conference hall. Second floor has administrative block and third to sixth floor has 24 court halls in total.

There are three elevators provided for the building, of which one in the back will be dedicated only for the judges. Two in front will be for public use.

PWD Chief Engineer on inspecting the building has suggested for installation of transparent lifts, for which an estimation of Rs 1.5 crore has been prepared.

Water supply

The building will have a complete water supply plan of Rs 67 lakh. The plan will not just include drinking water system but, will also accommodate fire fighting system and other purposes in it.

Fire fighting system has been provided with a separate sump of one lakh liter capacity. Another overhead tank of 50,000 liter capacity has been installed to take care of daily usage. The fire fighting system of Rs 1.5 crore is said to be one of the latest.

The entire furnishing of the court complex is said to cost around Rs 8.5 crore. However, a sum of Rs 4.5 crore for this has already been released.

No Fire NOC

The norms of the fire department say that any building of 14.5 mts in height should have a road of 12 mts width. However, here the complex is 29.4 mts high and the road left is far lesser than the set norms. Hence the fire department has not given its No Objection Certificate yet.

In this regard, a new project of Rs 7.5 crore has been planned to lay a road of 12 mts width from SCDCC Bank to Mahendra Acade in Karangalpady.

One has to wait and watch if the departments concerned will make justice to the court complex or will continue find reasons to delay the completion.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has issued an urgent warning following the discovery of potentially cancer-causing chemicals in cakes sold by certain bakeries across the state.

Recent tests conducted by the department revealed that some cake samples, particularly those with vibrant colors, contain harmful synthetic coloring agents such as Allura Red, a substance known to pose health risks. The findings have raised concerns about the use of artificial colors in bakery products, especially given their potential link to cancer and other serious health conditions.

"We routinely test various food products, and this time, our officials noticed unusually dark-colored cakes on the market," said Srinivas K, Commissioner of Food Safety for Karnataka. "Upon testing, we found that a few cakes contained Allura Red, a synthetic dye associated with health risks."

The use of artificial colors, especially in popular cakes like red velvet and pineapple varieties, is widespread as it attracts customers, particularly children. However, many bakers prefer using natural, safer alternatives, while some opt for synthetic dyes to enhance the cake's visual appeal.

"Most bakeries use permissible, natural colors that are safe for consumption. Unfortunately, a few are resorting to synthetic dyes just to make their cakes more attractive," said a bakery owner from Electronic City, speaking anonymously.

Medical experts are warning that consuming synthetic colors can lead to numerous health issues, including asthma and allergic reactions.

"Some of these artificial dyes are carcinogenic, and prolonged exposure could have serious consequences, especially for children and young adults," cautioned Dr. Vandana G, a private medical practitioner.

While the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) confirms that only a limited number of samples tested positive for harmful colors, legal action is being taken against the violators.

"There is no need for widespread panic or halting production. We are closely monitoring the situation, and only a few bakeries were found to be non-compliant. Rest assured, appropriate legal measures are underway," assured an FSSAI official.

New Delhi: Seeking to strengthen bilateral ties, India and the Maldives on Monday inked a currency swap agreement to the tune of $400 million, a move that would help the archipelago nation overcome foreign exchange reserve issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu also launched Rupay card in the Maldives, inaugurated the new runway at the Hanimadhoo International airport and agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations that had hit a rocky patch last year.

Muizzu, who is on a four-day state visit, held talks with Prime Minister Modi at the Hyderabad House here.

After the talks, India also handed over 700 social housing units to the Maldives built under the EXIM Bank’s buyer’s credit facilities.

"Today, we have inaugurated the redeveloped Hanimaadhoo Airport. Now, the Greater Male Connectivity Project will also be expedited. We will also support the development of a new commercial port in Thilafushi," Modi told reporters here with Muizzu by his side.

Modi said India and Maldives have decided to initiate discussion on the Free Trade Agreement to further strengthen economic ties.

The prime minister described Maldives as a "close friend" which had an important position in India's neighbourhood policy and SAGAR vision.

"India has always fulfilled the responsibilities of a neighbour. Today, we have taken up the vision of a comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership to give our mutual cooperation a strategic direction," Modi said.

Earlier, Muizzu was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhawan by President Droupadi Murmu. Prime Minister Modi was also present on the occasion.

Muizzu was given a tri-services guard of honour before he drove down the Rajghat to offer his respects at the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.

The ties between India and the Maldives came under severe strain since Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, took charge of the top office in November.

Muizzu won the presidential election last year on the 'India out' campaign and asked New Delhi to withdraw its military personnel posted in the archipelago nation by May this year.

The bilateral ties also hit a rocky patch when Maldivian ministers were critical of Modi. However, Muizzu has since toned down his anti-India stance and even sacked ministers who were critical of the Indian prime minister.

As the Maldives was grappling with a serious economic downturn, India has decided to extend vital budgetary support to the Maldives government with the rollover of a $50 million Treasury Bill for another year.
