The victim is identified as Madheva Appaji Desai (45), a farmer from Kayalowada near Panjeli in the taluk.
The incident occurred when Madheva was walking along the edge of his agricultural land near his home at 10 p.m. on Sunday. The elephant which was feeding on banana saplings nearby, suddenly turned on him and assaulted him savagely.
Severely injured by the assault, Madheva Desai died on the spot, oozing blood from his nose, mouth and ears.
With his home just yards away from the spot, he had had no inkling of the impending savage attack.
Relief to victim's family
The wildlife section of the Forest Department provided the victim's family with Rs 2 lakh as compensation. The cheque was handed over to victim's wife Parvati Desai, along with Rs 5,000 offered by the forest officials to cover the expenses to perform the last rites of the deceased.
Deputy Conservator of Forests (Karwar section) Nagaraj Nayak, Assistant Conservator Mohan Kanagila, assistant deputy conservator of forests (Wildlife section) U D Nayak, Satish Poojara, Santhosh Chauhan, K G Prakash and other personnel visited the spot. The officials offered their condolences to the victim's family.
