Kasargod, Jun 21: Due to the torrential rains that the region received over the last few days, the death toll has shot up to six.
Sea erosion having occurred in several places across the district, several coconut and other trees have fallen due to the severity of the waves lashing the shore.
Life has been thrown out of gear due to the incessant rainfall in the limits of 13 gram panchayat in the district. Several houses have crumbled in the rain, while farmers also faced damage to their crops. After the heavy rain from the past week, the rainfall reduced a notch on Wednesday and Thursday. The region received total rainfall of 888 mm in the past 20 days.
Sea erosion
Sea erosion has considerably increased on the shores of Cherangai, Nellikunje areas due to the consistent heavy rains. Owing to the increase of sea erosion in Cherangai, about 25 houses are at risk at the edge of the shore. A coastline of about 2 km long has been ravaged by the sea and its rough waves.
Stone boulders meant for the retaining wall to be built along the shore have been pulled into the sea, and the houses of Kalyani, Upendra, Balakrishna, Pavitra, Pushpa, Narayana and Madhava are in danger of crumbling or being washed away. In addition, several other houses also face risk of crumbling.
Officials from the revenue department visited the spot few days ago and conducted an examination. President of the city council standing committee G Narayanan has urged the authorities to provide relief to the affected families.
Roads submerged
In a ward under Mangalpadi panchayat, rainwater has submerged a road, posing problems to the commuters.
The locals say that the closing of a rainwater drain to construct a road had resulted in this situation. School children struggled to reach school owing to the situation.
