Shihabuddin, 22, a resident of Jokatte in Surathkal, said in his complaint that he was assaulted without any provocation by a gang of five miscreants.
The youth stopped his car near the Idya branch of State Bank of India in Surathkal and was talking to a girl when five men surrounded him.
"I did nothing wrong. I was speaking to a girl I had met a year ago. We're close to each other," the victim said.
Based on his complaint, the police arrested Mokshith, Santhosh, Deepak, Baba and Lakshmikanth, all five residents of Idya and surrounding areas, and allegedly belong to a right wing group.
Cases were booked under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation).
All the accused were released on bail after being produced before a court.
It could be recalled here that during his recent visit to Mangalore, the home minister K J George had said the government would not allow anyone to take the law into their hands.
He had warned that the police officials will be held responsible if any type of moral policing incidents happen in the coastal districts.
