Manipal, Jun 21: The students of Manipal University staged a massive protest in front of the administrative block of the university building here on Friday evening demanding better security in the campus and immediate arrest of the rapists.

The protest was held against the backdrop of kidnapping and sexual assault of a medical student of the university on Thursday night.

The protest which started around 7 pm went on till late night. The students who were bent upon their concern over inadequate security in the campus raised their voices against the intrusions of locals in and around the campus.

They demanded barricades to be put around the campus for the safety of the students. They expressed their deep anguish over the lackadaisical attitude of the University security officials over maintenance of appropriate security in the area. The students who gathered in large numbers, said that the inquiry should be hastened and the culprits should be nabbed.

Meanwhile, Manipal University Pro Chancellor Dr H S Ballal assured frequent campus patrolling and he said that more number of mobile vans and patrolling vans will be added to the security system. He also said that measures will be taken against the movement of auto-rickshaw drivers within the campus.

However students, who seemed to be dissatisfied over the assurances, continued their protest shouting slogans against the security system in the University. They also referred to some incidents where students had lost their lives owing to the negligence of the campus security personnel.

The classmate of the victim (fourth year MBBS student) who did not wish to be quoted, said the victim was a very good girl who is very hard working and brilliant.

"As we had exams on Friday at 2 pm, the victim had been studying in the library late night. Besides she is also a good singer. She has great family values and aspired to reach greater heights. It is big shock to all of us,” she said and added that many students learnt about the incident only in the afternoon on Friday, though the incident occured on Thursday night.

Demand for SIT

Former MLA K. Raghupati Bhat said that he condemned the incident of sexual assault. The police should investigate the case properly and arrest the guilty. A lot of students from other countries were studying in Manipal. Such an incident of sexual assault had never taken place earlier.

A special investigation team (SIT) should be formed to investigate the case quickly, he said.

Bengaluru: In response to the rising number of Caesarean deliveries in Karnataka, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, announced on Monday that the state government would introduce a dedicated programme next month to address this issue.

Replying to MLC Jagadev Guthedar's question in the Legislative Council, the minister revealed that Caesarean deliveries now account for 46% of total births in the state. He noted that private hospitals conduct 61% of these procedures, while government hospitals perform 36%.

The minister emphasized the necessity of preventing unnecessary Caesarean deliveries. He highlighted that some private hospitals perform Caesarean sections in 80% to 90% of cases primarily for financial gain, finding it easier compared to normal deliveries. To counteract this, the Health Department plans to launch a separate programme in January aimed at reducing such procedures.

Gundu Rao underscored the importance of mentally preparing pregnant women for normal deliveries. "We are already conducting an audit of Caesarean deliveries at every hospital to understand the necessity and rationale behind the doctors' decisions," he added.

Additionally, the minister mentioned the government's intention to provide round-the-clock maternity services at taluk hospitals to further discourage unnecessary Caesarean deliveries.

Regarding foeticide cases, the minister informed the House that in 2023-24 and 2024-25, 45 individuals were arrested for violating the Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act. Cases were registered in Belagavi, Kolar, Mandya, and Bengaluru Rural.
