Mangalore, Jun 23: The state government must not think twice in taking action against officials who are sometimes hand in glove with anti-social elements carrying out sexual assaults, said M Veerappa Moily, Union Petroleum Minister.
Speaking to media persons on the Manipal gang rape incident on the sidelines of a programme in Manjeshwar on Sunday, Mr. Moily said that many a time officials and police officers themselves provide support to anti social elements who indulge in rapes and sexual assaults.
“Such officials must not be spared. If police officers are also found to be supporting or allowing anti social elements to get away, action must be taken against them too. All attempts must be made to ensure that the sanctity of an educational hub like Manipal is not desecrated. I have spoken to the state's Home Minister. The state government under the leadership of Siddharamiah is potent enough to tackle this problem”, Mr. Moily said.
The minister said that attempts must also be made to check growing drug menace and alcoholism in and around college campuses.
NDA falling apart
Responding to a question on JD(U)'s exit from NDA, Mr. Moily said that the development is a “good development for democracy”.
“This is a fresh wave of secularism which augurs well for the future of the country. The BJP's stand on the Narendra Modi issue will take secular parties away from the BJP. The NDA is falling apart and if the BJP sticks to its guns, it will be left with no partners in the days to come”, Mr. Moily said.
Prices will stabilize
On the fluctuating oil prices, the Union Minister said that after he took charge of the Petroleum ministry, he reduced the prices four times but the fluctuation continues courtesy rupee devaluation. Stabilization will come about in the days to come, he said.
