Members of the district unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in the city.
Senior CPI(M) leader B Madhava said that even after the Delhi gang-rape incident, several incidents of sexual harassment on women had occurred in this region such as the Sowjanya case, most of which had not been solved.
Manipal is the hub of education, where students come from distant places to pursue their studies. The university and its authorities also collect a high amount of money students as fees for courses. The management should look after the safety of its students along with providing them with good infrastructure. If the issue of students' security is not addressed in the coming days, others may fear coming to Manipal for their studies, he cautioned.
Terming it as a shameful incident, he said that the carelessness of the college authorities had led to the occurrence of the kidnapping and gang-rape of the medical student. It is the responsibility of the college management to ensure the safety of students inside its campus, he said. He questioned the need for college buildings and libraries to be open till late hours.
Mr Madhava said that proper investigation had to be conducted by the police department in both the districts. He also expressed a need for tougher implementation of laws to ensure the security of students in undivided Dakshina Kannada district.
CPI(M) leaders Vasant Achari, Sunil Kumar Bajal and K R Shriyan, Balakrishna Shetty, U B Lokaiah, DYFI district president Muneer Katipalla, ex-corporator Jayanthi and others participated in the protest.
