Mangalore, Jun 26: Strong winds and harsher sea waves have been accentuating the 'super-moon' effect in areas of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kasargod districts.

Sea erosions in the coastal belt got severe as a result. Traditional fishermen could not venture into the sea and those who did, had to return following their inability to sail any further owing to the harsh waves. Scenes of sea waves thrashing the shoreline with high intensity at Panambur beach were on display as well.

Trees have been uprooted in many places and electricity supply has received a blow too.

Sea erosions were reported from areas of Ullal in Mangalore, Someshwara, Uchila, Mukkacheri, Sasihitlu, Katpadi and Mattukopla. In the neighbouring Kasaragod district of Kerala, a house belonging to one Kartaayini has been washed away by the sea. Areas from where sea erosion was reported include Manjeshwar, Kanvateertha, Uppala Sharadanagara, Cherangai, Mogral Puttur, Adkattabail Kadappura, Light House, Kasaba Kadappura, Keeyuru, Kotikulam, Trikkannad, Kannangad and Ajanur. A house belonging to Narayaani near Poyinachi Karicheri bridge collapsed due to heavy rains and the inmates of the house had a narrow escape, it is reported.

Kasargod

Though there was a brief respite from the rain lashing northern Kerala on Tuesday, people living along the coastline of the district continue to live in fear and agony with unabated sea erosion battering several stretches of the coast.

In two separate incidents, two fishermen who ventured into the rough sea were reported dead in the last couple of days after their fibre boat capsized in heavy waves off the Bekal beach.

The sea continued to be rough along the beaches of Kasaba, Kavugoli, Bekal, Cherangai, Mogral, Valiyaparamba Koppal near Uduma, and Thrikkarippur on Tuesday, washing off roads and destroying plants and tress. The sea erosion has triggered panic among the residents, who are already reeling under the impact of the trawling ban now in force.

Reports reaching here said the house of Karthiayani, a resident of the Kasaba beach, was destroyed after sea waters gushed into it on Monday night. Around 35 houses on the Kavugoli beach are facing the wrath of the rough sea. A section of fishermen have sought official intervention to shift them to safer places.

Around 1.5 km of road connecting the Cherangai-Kavugoli beaches was washed away in sea water since Monday. Several coconut palms and other trees were uprooted.

The affected families seek construction of additional sea wall and reinforcement of existing ones in beach areas facing sea erosion. Quite a few of the sea walls got scattered under the impact of mighty waves on the Mogral beach recently.

P. Karunakaran, MP, visited the Lighthouse beach here on Tuesday to assess the gravity of the situation.

According to official sources, 51 persons sustained minor injuries in rain- related calamities and standing crops in 7.5 hectares of land got damaged in the district. Eight houses suffered partial damage since Monday.

District Collector P.S. Mohammed sager said two families from Kasaba beach had been shifted to the tsunami housing colony at Beerandabayal. Senior officials visited the affected area to assess the situation, the Collector added.

What is a super-moon?

The average distance between earth and the moon is 3.84 lakh kilometers but on some occasions, the distance shrinks to 3.56 lakh kilometers while on some occasions it increases to 4.05 lakh kilometers. When the distance between earth and moon shrinks to 3.56 lakh kilometers, the moon appears closer and bigger in size. This is called 'Super Moon', says Dr. A P Bhat, Head of Physics Department, Poornaprajna College, Udupi.

Last Sunday, June 23, was a 'super-moon' day, as the closest and largest full moon of the year and the Moon's closest encounter with Earth for all of 2013.

On this day, sea waves get harsher. The wind from the western side was harsher in Malpe beach. This is a feature during full moon days, says Gopal Kunder, Presiden,. Malpe Deep Sea Fishing Boat Owners' Association.

Bengaluru, Sep 28: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing charges against arrested Karnataka BJP MLA N. Munirathna Naidu, including allegations of rape, honey-trapping, and other offences, on Saturday conducted raids at his residence and 15 other locations across the city.

Sources confirmed that the raids were taking place at his Vyalikaval residence and other properties owned by the BJP MLA. The operation is being conducted by the SIT under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) led by ACP Kavitha.

The team is examining documents, electronic devices, and other materials related to the rape and honey-trapping case. The SIT is being supported by experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), with Superintendent of Police (SP) Sowmya Latha also participating in the search and inspection at Munirathna’s Vyalikaval residence.

According to sources, the raids were triggered by information provided by the victim, who alleged that Munirathna recorded footage of sexual assaults and used it to blackmail politicians and public servants, including IAS and IPS officers.

The victim reportedly revealed that she was used to entrap the woman who had lodged a rape case against a senior IFS officer. She was allegedly instructed to frame the rape victim in a drug peddling case.

The complainant told police that she was tasked with capturing compromising videos of the rape victim who had filed the case against the IFS officer. She claimed that, after several failed attempts to obtain the videos, the victim was drugged with sleeping pills, and obscene footage was recorded without her consent. Later, the IFS officer was bailed out from the charges.

Furthermore, the complainant has accused MLA Munirathna of raping her at his office within the state legislature, in his official vehicle, and at his godown. She has alleged that he recorded videos of these assaults.

Police sources also revealed that the victim in the MLA's case provided details of a plot involving sending HIV-infected women to Munirathna's targets in an attempt to ruin them politically and personally. She also disclosed the names of several politicians whom she had entrapped through honey-trapping.

The woman further claimed that Munirathna had threatened to have her son kidnapped and killed if she refused to comply with his demands. According to her, the MLA had a well-organised team dedicated to carrying out these honey-trapping operations, and she provided details about his close associates and relatives involved in the scheme.

Munirathna, who was in judicial custody following his arrest in the rape and honey-trap case, has now been taken into the custody of the SIT.

The MLA was transferred from Bengaluru Central Jail to the CID office on the night of September 24. The BJP legislator, however, has denied all the allegations, claiming they are false.

Karnataka Congress leader D.K. Suresh had alleged that Munirathna was trying to infect his adversaries with HIV and that the government should investigate the matter.

Mangaluru, Oct 8: The city of Mangaluru mourns the loss of M Ahmed, a pioneering businessman, philanthropist, and the Founder Chairman of the AK Group. He passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of service, innovation, and community building.

M Ahmed, also fondly known as A K Ahmed, was a man of humble beginnings who grew into one of the most respected entrepreneurs in South India. He founded the AK Group in 1984, which has since flourished into a multi-faceted business empire. The company, which began as a small frame manufacturing unit, now encompasses a wide range of industries, including plywood, formaldehyde, particle boards, fire-rated products, and more. AK Group's growth extended beyond India, with manufacturing units established in Myanmar and Vietnam.

What began with 18 employees in 1984 has today expanded to provide employment to approximately 3,000 people in India and 400 abroad. M Ahmed’s dedication and vision were instrumental in transforming the company into a market leader, recognized for its high-quality products and innovation. AK Plywood is now one of India’s top plywood manufacturers, and the largest in South India. The company was Karnataka’s first plywood manufacturer to receive ISO certification and has garnered prestigious awards, including the Rising Stars Power Brands Award in London (2017) and the Best Manufacturer Award from MSME Karnataka (2018).

Ahmed’s business success was deeply rooted in values instilled in him during his early years. He worked alongside his father, the late Abdul Khader Moopa, loading sawn timber, and it was from these humble beginnings that he developed his work ethic, pioneering spirit, and respect for time—values that remained the cornerstone of his remarkable career.

His foresight was evident when he recognized the potential of timber from Perumbavoor, Kerala, for plywood and blockboards at a time when it was merely being used as firewood. This strategic move led to the establishment of one of the first frame manufacturing and peeling units there, and soon after, Ahmed launched his own company in Mangaluru, swiftly earning national and international recognition.

Beyond plywood, the AK Group has diversified into multiple industries, including marine food, pharmaceuticals, construction materials, hypermarkets in India and the UAE, and food industries in Indonesia. Under Ahmed’s leadership, the company’s reach expanded, ensuring its position as a formidable player in various sectors.

Ahmed was not only an extraordinary businessman but also a deeply compassionate individual, dedicated to social and religious causes. He served as the founding president of the managing committee of Ihsan Masjid in Mangaluru and established the Highland Educational and Cultural Centre. His philanthropic efforts were as vast as his business ventures, benefiting countless communities both in India and abroad.

His kindness, simplicity, and punctuality were hallmarks of his character. Those who knew him admired his unyielding commitment to excellence, as well as his warmth and generosity. M Ahmed is survived by his wife, three daughters, and four sons, who continue his legacy of philanthropy and social service.

As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from all sectors of society. Social, religious, and political leaders in Mangaluru expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of a man who dedicated his life to improving the lives of others.

M Ahmed’s journey from humble beginnings to massive success will continue to inspire generations. His life serves as a testament to the power of vision, perseverance, and, above all, integrity.
