Mangalore, Jun 28: Members of People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Mangalore, alleged dereliction of duty by Kadri police, who purportedly refused to register an FIR immediately after complaints were filed in two separate instances in the station.
He said that Mrs Vas had lodged a complaint in this regard on March 19, 2013 at Kadri police station. In her complaint, she mentioned the theft of jewellery worth Rs 12 lakh by one Hilda, who reportedly had many aliases and already had cases against her at Ullal and Mulki police stations.
Instead of booking an FIR, Kadri police gave a non-cognizable receipt for lost gold, inspite of having named Hilda alias Anitha as a suspect. An FIR was only booked on April 15 after submitting a petition to the DCP. Even inspite of providing details of the accused, no arrest has been made till date. It is the duty of the police to at least conduct an inquiry into the matter, he said, adding that the police had neglected to perform their duty.
“Why was the FIR registered after a month? The Kadri police also informed that the accused Hilda (alias Anitha) had obtained an anticipatory bail and hence she could not be arrested, leading us to believe that the police may have joined hands with the culprits,” he said.
Mr D'Sa also brought to notice the plight of Mr John Tauro, who was allegedly assaulted and injured by advocate and corporator (Court ward) A C Vinayaraj on October 28 last year.
Mr John Tauro, who was present on the occasion, said that the police had not booked an FIR after he had filed a complaint. He alleged that, on the other hand, the police had booked a case against him, on the grounds of Vinayaraj's bogus complaint. Mr Tauro said that he further had to obtain an anticipatory bail and file a counter-case for his own safety.
PUCL members alleged that police had supported the culprits in both the cases, and wished to bring this to the notice of the media and public.
PUCL district president David D'Souza was present on the occasion.
