The services of a machine-fitted fibre boat would be made available from Saturday. The bridge, which had been built at an estimated Rs.3.93 crore, collapsed barely two months after it was thrown open on April 29.
A decision to this effect was taken at an all-party meeting held at the Valiyaparamba panchayat hall. The meeting, chaired by K. Kunhiraman, Trikaripur MLA, authorised the grama panchayat authorities to take appropriate action to arrange boat services for villagers.
The meeting was attended by District Collector P.S. Muhammed Sagir and Sub-Collector Venkateshpati along with Hosdurg Tahsildar Y.M.C. Sukumaran and B. Shaji, General Manager of Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company Ltd. (KEL) that was entrusted with the responsibility of erecting the 320-m bridge and members of the grama panchayat.
Mr. Sagir assured the aggrieved people that the boat services would be carried out in an efficient manner without giving room for any complaints. He also assured them that punitive steps would be taken against the officials found guilty in the ongoing probe into the circumstances that led to the abrupt collapse of the bridge.
The 320-m Madakkal suspension bridge in Kasaragod, stated to be the longest in the State, collapsed, barely two months after its opening by Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash. Two people on the bridge had a miraculous escape.
