BSY's return: BJP puts ball in ex-CM's court

BSY
Bangalore, Jun 29: Applying brakes to efforts by a section of the party to bring back BS Yeddyurappa, BJP on saturday put the ball in the former Karnataka chief minister's court, saying the proposal for homecoming should come from him.

"Since Yeddyurappa had left the party on his own, he should send us a proposal (of his return). Thereafter, the state BJP core committee will discuss it," BJP incharge of Karnataka Thawar Chand Gehlot told reporters after the state BJP core committee meeting where the issue figured.

The decision has been left to the party's central leadership, he said.

Gehlot said the meeting discussed 2014 Lok Sabha polls and Yeddyurappa's return. "State BJP President Prahlad Joshi raised the issue saying he was approached by a section of party leaders demanding Yeddyurappa's return."

Asked if Yeddyurappa's return would bring victory to BJP in Lok Sabha elections, Gehlot said "you and we all feel that if we were together, the situation could have been better."

Replying to another query, Gehlot said it is true that one section is supporting Yeddyurappa's return while another is opposing it. He added that the issue will be solved only after the KJP President moves a proposal in this regard.

Asked about Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's opinion on Yeddyurappa's return, Gehlot said "there is no question of an individual (decision). Once the proposal is sent, BJP Parliamentary Board will deliberate and decide."

The move to bring back Yeddyurappa gathered pace after former chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda and former ministers Aravind Limbavali, Umesh Katti and Basavaraj Katti among others presented their views to Joshi.

These leaders strongly believe Yeddyurappa's return would boost BJP's prospects in the next Lok Sabha polls.

Last week, they had met at party MP DB Chandre Gowda's residence to discuss their plan to bring back the Lingayat leader, who has floated his KJP months after being forced to quit as chief minister over the illegal mining controversy.

Yeddyurappa, however, had ruled out his homecoming for now saying that nobody has approached him so far and he was keen on strengthening and maintaining a separate identity of Karnataka Janata Paksha.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department has issued an urgent warning following the discovery of potentially cancer-causing chemicals in cakes sold by certain bakeries across the state.

Recent tests conducted by the department revealed that some cake samples, particularly those with vibrant colors, contain harmful synthetic coloring agents such as Allura Red, a substance known to pose health risks. The findings have raised concerns about the use of artificial colors in bakery products, especially given their potential link to cancer and other serious health conditions.

"We routinely test various food products, and this time, our officials noticed unusually dark-colored cakes on the market," said Srinivas K, Commissioner of Food Safety for Karnataka. "Upon testing, we found that a few cakes contained Allura Red, a synthetic dye associated with health risks."

The use of artificial colors, especially in popular cakes like red velvet and pineapple varieties, is widespread as it attracts customers, particularly children. However, many bakers prefer using natural, safer alternatives, while some opt for synthetic dyes to enhance the cake's visual appeal.

"Most bakeries use permissible, natural colors that are safe for consumption. Unfortunately, a few are resorting to synthetic dyes just to make their cakes more attractive," said a bakery owner from Electronic City, speaking anonymously.

Medical experts are warning that consuming synthetic colors can lead to numerous health issues, including asthma and allergic reactions.

"Some of these artificial dyes are carcinogenic, and prolonged exposure could have serious consequences, especially for children and young adults," cautioned Dr. Vandana G, a private medical practitioner.

While the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) confirms that only a limited number of samples tested positive for harmful colors, legal action is being taken against the violators.

"There is no need for widespread panic or halting production. We are closely monitoring the situation, and only a few bakeries were found to be non-compliant. Rest assured, appropriate legal measures are underway," assured an FSSAI official.

In a significant development, a special court tasked with handling cases against Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MP/MLAs) has ordered that a First Information Report (FIR) be filed regarding the Muda case.

Additionally, the Karnataka Lokayukta, which is an anti-corruption body, has been tasked with investigating allegations against Siddaramaiah, who is reportedly involved in the case.

The court instructed the Lokayukta (an anti-corruption authority) to provide a report within three months. It also ordered the relevant authorities to file a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the case.

Judge Santhosh Gajanan Bhat issued the directive, compelling the Mysuru Lokayukta police to commence an investigation following a formal complaint lodged by Snehamayi Krishna.

The Karnataka Lokayukta in Mysuru is required to carry out the investigation under Section 156 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code, which mandates the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).
