Mangalore, Jul 4: Sudden gush of water has inundated several areas of Maravoor near Bajpe on the outskirts of the city on Thursday, causing the region to be flooded due to the overflow of water at the vented dam caused by heavy rain.
Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, engineer in-charge of Maravoor vented dam Prabhakar said that no damage had occurred to the actual structure of the dam. “Due to heavy rains from the past two days, the water level in the Gurpur river exceeded the danger level causing floods in the region. The catchment areas of the vented dam have also flooded. Few houses along the river in Maravoor have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, and no damage has been reported so far,” he said, adding that the floods were caused solely due to the lashing heavy rains.
He said that once the water level decreases, the fallen trees that have blocked the areas situated upstream would be cleared, and damages would be assessed, if there were any.
Several coconut trees were uprooted and water entered several houses both upstream and downstream of the Gurpur river, causing inconvenience to people.
Even last year, areas around Maravoor had been flooded during the monsoons following the collapse of the retaining wall attached to the vented dam.
