Moodbidri, Jul 6: As many as 16 precious idols of Jain deities, worth Rs 13 crores, were stolen by thieves from a Jain temple, here.
Thieves barged into the Siddantha Pratima Darshana Basadi, decamped with the idols made of gold, silver and panchaloha besides stealing diamonds.
It is suspected that the thieves might have gained entry into the temple by breaking open the back windows with the help of a gas cutter.
They also managed to cut off the CCTV camera connection.
Moodbidri town police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.
Charukeerthi Panditacharyavarya Swamiji, the chief pontiff of the Jain mutt, is currently on a US tour to attend a religious convention. It is suspected that the thieves might have committed the crime taking advantage of the pontiff's absence.
Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade, Mulky-Moodbidri MLA and minster for Youth Affairs and Fisheries K Abhaychandra Jain, former minister B Janardhan Poojari also visited the Basadi.
