The deceased have been identified as Prathima, wife of Naveen Chandra, a former military man and their daughter Dia.
Even though police have suspected that this might be a case of suicide, the exact cause for the death is yet to be ascertained.
Some of the local residents are of the suspension that the family problems might have provoked the mother to push her daughter into well and end life.
The family resided near R R Mill in Melkar. Prathima used to visit Mangalore every day as she was working as a nurse at AJ Hospital in the city. Her daughter Dia was studying at a primary school in Panemangalore. Ex serviceman Naveen is currently working as a safety officer in Mangalore.
On Wednesday too Prathima had reported for the duty as usually. However, after returning home in the evening, she might have resorted to this extreme step due to some family reasons, it is suspected.
However the incident came to light only on Thursday morning, when local residents noticed two floating dead bodies in the well.
Both the dead bodies were fished out with the help of fire brigade and sent for postmortem. Police conducted the spot investigation.
As soon as the news began to spread, over a hundred people gathered in front of the Bantwal government hospital, where the dead bodies had been kept for post-mortem.
A case has been registered at Bantwal town police station.
