Mangalore, Jul 19: A theft was reported at a private tile store in Highland here on Friday, wherein Rs 49,000 in cash was stolen along with several pieces of expensive tile ware.
The theft occurred at P C Mallapa and Co tile and sanitary ware store located beside Highland Hospital in Mangalore.
According to the manager of the store Nithyananda Hegde, the theft was discovered on Friday morning when the staff arrived to open the store for business.
It is presumed that the theft occurred in the late hours on Thursday after the store was closed for the day. No other damage was reported in the store.
Police sources said that the CCTV cameras installed inside the store had been switched off when the store was closed, which was unfortunate. There was no anti-burglary alarm as well.
According to them, the thieves had broken the lock on a rear roller shutter and gained entry to the store through a window located behind the shutter. The thieves made straight to the desk where the cash had been stored. Several pieces of expensive and sophisticated sanitary ware stored in boxes on the first floor were also taken from the store. The stolen sanitary ware is priced between Rs 3,000 and 4,000 each.
The modus operandi of the theft leads one to presume that the theft may have been an inside job.
Pandeshwar police arrived at a spot and began conducting investigation. The store is being dusted for fingerprints and other clues.
