Bangalore, Jul 19: An anonymous letter threatening to blow up the campus of software major Wipro here with 19 bombs sparked a security scare, sending police into a tizzy.

"Police and bomb squad have carried out their search at Wipro campus and have found no suspicious object in the vicinity," a police officer told PTI.

A letter claiming to blow up Wipro's corporate and training block at 11 AM on Friday and 1 PM on Saturday with 19 bombs was delivered to Sarjapur police station. The letter had no mention about the sender, police said.

Security has been beefed up in the campus following the threat.

"On receipt of the letter, we have stepped up security in and around the campus and intensified patrolling by deploying additional force and frisking everyone to prevent any untoward incident," a police official said.

Though the letter, written by hand in English, was received earlier in the day by the Sarjapur police station without the sender's name or address, police have taken the threat seriously, as it had mentioned that "19 bombs have been planted in and around Wipro campus and will go off between Friday 11 p.m. and Saturday 1 p.m."

"We are not taking any chance though the letter may be hoax, as there is no mention of who wrote, from where and why. As the postal mark from where it was sent is not clear, we have asked the postal department to verify its origin of destination," Police Inspector B. Rama Murthy said.

The IT bellwether's corporate headquarters and training centre are located in the campus, about 20km southeast of city, while its software development centre is in the electronics city, about 30km southwest of the city.

"The company has its own (private) security and adequate measures are in place to ensure safety of its employees and security of its offices across the campus. We have, however, alerted the company about the letter and need to take precautions," Murthy said.

Wipro admitted that a security check was undertaken of its Sarjapur campus, while its operations continued to be as usual.

"As a matter of routine, a security check was undertaken at our Sarjapur campus. Our operations continue to be business as usual," the company said in a statement later.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
