Rani Abbakka Utsava Samiti has staged protest an honour to the heroic lady by naming the airport after her.
Renaming process
In order to rename Mangalore international airport, issues discussed at the district level must reach legislative assembly and if the proposal is approved then central government will announce the new name.
“The renaming of the airport has remained to be a demand and it has not been translated into process yet. It needs will from the elected representatives. However, this could not happen due to lack of interest," said former MLA Jayaram Shetty.
History of airport
Airport was opened in 1951 with connectivity to Mumbai. Run way was extended in 1971 for Boeing air crafts. Currently there are two run ways, viz 8,038 feet and 5,330 feet. New terminal has been built at an estimated budget of Rs 147 crore. The airport received international airport tag in 2002 from Ministry of Civil Aviation.
UT Khadar, Minster for Health and Family Welfare, who represents Mangalore (erstwhile Ullall) constituency says that Rani Abbakka's glory will be alive if the airport is named after her.
"It is the right name in order to pay her the respect that she deserves. I will do all that is possible to complete requisites for the same at the state level," he said
Nalini Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament said that he had raised the issue of renaming of Mangalore International Airport during the parliament session. "I had mooted to name the airport after U Srinivas Mallya. But, later I found that the state had not sent any proposal for the same. This time I will take a committee from the district to demand the same," he said.
