Around 10.30 a.m., Ranjith, a student of the Uppinangady First Grade College, pulled the ponytail of a girl, belonging to Muslim community without any provocation. The boy allegedly belonged to a saffron outfit.
The incident led to a heated argument between the Hindu group that supported the boy, and the Muslim group that got behind the girl.
Blows were exchanged as members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP, and the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress, clashed.
The groups comprised first year commerce and second year arts students, said a senior police officer.
Police rushed to the spot and resorted to baton charge to bring situation under control. Ranjith was arrested by the police.
Four students suffered minor injuries for which they were given medical treatment, said the police.
Inspector-General of Police C.H. Pratap Reddy and Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal also visited the spot.
While the situation petered out around evening, a battalion of the reserve police will be posted near the college when the college reopens on Friday, said the Uppinangady police.
A case has been registered at jurisdictional police station based on the complaint given by the girl.
