Mangalore, Jul 30: As challenging as it is to venture on roads in the heavy monsoon rains, these teams revel in the challenge it poses. As many as 36 adrenaline-driven teams from various cities across the country were part of Mahindra Adventure 'Monsoon Challenge 2013' that kicked off at Malleshwaram in Bangalore on Thursday.
Braving the rough terrain and harsh weather, the participating teams raced on Mahindra vehicles for over 1000 kms from the state capital to Mangalore, Shimoga and Karwar over the weekend, before finishing at Goa on Sunday, in the four-day rally organised by Mangalore-based Indian Motor Sports Club (IMSC).
In its third edition, Monsoon Challenge 2013, one of the biggest TSD motorsport rallies, tested the skill and will of drivers as well as the Mahindra SUVs as they weaved through estates and ghats in the steady downpour of rain for four days.
For most, it is the thrill of the ride and rush of adrenaline they experience that prompts them to wiz across hilly towns in the rally.
The teams competed against each other in different categories such as SUV Open, corporate, couple, amateur and media category, for the final prize money of Rs 13 lakhs.
The rally also saw a sole team in the All-ladies category comprising of Sonu Bambi from Delhi and Pratima Naidu from Hyderabad, racing in a Mahindra Quanto. It also saw a young female driver Garima Avtar from Delhi participating in the couple category with co-driver Dhiraj Arora, among several others.
Talking to mediapersons during their stop at Mangalore on Friday, contestant-driver Sonu Bambi said that she thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, which accordingly to her was 'wonderful and rocking'. She said that she also enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the course of the rally as well as the hospitability of the organisers.
At the end of Leg 4, Ganesh Moorthy and Nagarajan emerged as the overall winners of the rally.
