The incident occurred at around 5:45 p.m. when Vijayendra Bhat, a businessman and resident of V T Road, Mangalore, was driving his Mahindra Scorpio, bearing registration number KA 44 N 11, towards Ballal Bagh.
Sources said that two the miscreants, who came on a black Pulsar, opened fire at his vehicle and fled the spot.
Underworld hand?
According to the police sources Vijayendra Bhat had received threat calls from emerging underworld don Vicky Shetty on July 29. A case had also been filed with Barke police station in this regard.
Soon after the incident sleuths from Barke police Station rushed to the spot. District crime intelligence bureau also inspected the spot and taken the car to police station for further investigation.
The bullet missed Bhat by a few inches and hit the space between the metal frame and rubber beading and shattered the glass. Vijayendra was on his way to his friend's restaurant in Ballalbagh when the incident happened.
Vijayendra Bhat told reporters he received a threatening call from a person who identified himself as Vicky Shetty on July 29. "I noticed a motorcyle following my car this morning. After the incident, I took my car to the premises of Sai Palace Apartment near Mannagudda for safety," he said.
Vijayendra said that he had received a threatening call earlier from the same person. "I gave a written complaint to the police commissioner about that call," he added.
The miscreants slammed into a two-wheeler soon after the incident. While trying to flee the spot, their speeding bike hit the two-wheeler of Nagaraj, an employee of SIM Technology, Mannagudda. Nagaraj and his friend Ajay Anand fell onto the road. "We didn't know that these men were escaping after committing a crime. They managed to lift up their bike and sped away immediately. Sharath, a nearby shopkeeper, tried to follow them but they managed to escape," he added. Barke police registered a case. Police were searching the area for the bullet casing.
