Bypoll tie-up: Kumaraswamy plays his cards close to chest

Bangalore, Aug 7: JD?(S) state president H?D Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said the main aim of his party is to defeat the Congress in the by-elections to two Lok Sabha seats.

However, unlike his father H?D?Deve Gowda, he did not deny that the JD (S) will have no understanding with the BJP to achieve the set goal.

In an interaction with this newspaper, Kumaraswamy said that the foremost goal is to retain the two LS?seats. “Politically, the Congress' main agenda is to finish the JD?(S). Our battle, and priority, is to retain the seats. These seats have been associated with our party for a long time and have been vacated due to our resignations. It is our duty to win the seats.” he said.

While sidestepping the question whether the JD?(S) has accepted an alliance with the BJP, he said the main aim is very clear for him as winning these elections are a necessary testimonial for the party's survival. For that, the Congress has to be defeated. He neither confirmed nor denied a tie-up with the BJP.

Asked why the party had not fielded their candidates for the legislative council by-elections, the former chief minister said that all the three seats were the stronghold of the BJP and, hence, his party was not competing.

“Besides, as our National President (H?D?Deve Gowda) has said earlier, there is a problem within the party to fund the MLC elections. Further, even our party workers are not keen to contest the elections for these three seats,” he justified.

But his MLA brother H?D?Revanna said that he did not know the meaning of understanding. “It is Kumaraswamy who takes care of such things in the party,” he added.

On Siddaramaiah criticising the JD (S) for holding talks with the BJP, Revanna said the Congress had forged an alliance with the BJP in Mysore zilla panchayat in the past. The Chief Minister should first clarify about it, he said sarcastically.

Though the BJP and JD?(S) leaders are not ready to openly declare having formed an alliance for the by-polls to LS?and Council seats, their actions in the last two days are clearly hinting at a tacit understanding between the two parties.

While the BJP is demanding that the JD?(S) make the understanding they have arrived at official by issuing a public statement, the JD (S) is not ready to do so because party national president ?Deve Gowda is opposed to making any such statement. He has left it to his son Kumaraswamy to handle the issue.

Leaders of both the parties do admit in private that the talks are still on, while silently working on implementing the agreement.

The JD?(S) has not fielded any candidate for the council by polls from Mysore, Hubli-Dharwad and Chitradurga. The last date for filing nominations was Monday.

The nomination papers of the BJP candidate for Bangalore rural LS constituency T Muniraju has been rejected on technical grounds. Similarly, the papers of party's Mandya candidate B?N?Lokesh has been rejected. Now, the only step to be taken to implement the unwritten and undeclared agreement is to ensure BJP's M?Krishnappa withdraws his papers filed for Bangalore rural seat.

Krishnappa is the BJP MLA from Bangalore south Assembly constituency and a close follower of former minister R Ashoka. He wields considerable clout in his constituency.

Besides, the BJP has strong presence in Anekal, Rajarajeshwarinagar and Kunigal Assembly segments which come under Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha seat. The JD (S), therefore, wants Krishnappa to back out, sources said.

Wednesday is the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers.

Anitha, wife of Kumaraswamy, is the JD (S) candidate for Bangalore rural, facing Congress leader D?K?Shivakumar's brother D?K Suresh as Congress nominee. C?S?Puttaraju is the nominee of the JD?(S) in

Mandya, who may face a stiff fight from Ramya of the Congress. A clear picture of the candidates who remain in the fray would emerge on Wednesday after withdrawals.

Bengaluru, Sep 28: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing charges against arrested Karnataka BJP MLA N. Munirathna Naidu, including allegations of rape, honey-trapping, and other offences, on Saturday conducted raids at his residence and 15 other locations across the city.

Sources confirmed that the raids were taking place at his Vyalikaval residence and other properties owned by the BJP MLA. The operation is being conducted by the SIT under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) led by ACP Kavitha.

The team is examining documents, electronic devices, and other materials related to the rape and honey-trapping case. The SIT is being supported by experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), with Superintendent of Police (SP) Sowmya Latha also participating in the search and inspection at Munirathna’s Vyalikaval residence.

According to sources, the raids were triggered by information provided by the victim, who alleged that Munirathna recorded footage of sexual assaults and used it to blackmail politicians and public servants, including IAS and IPS officers.

The victim reportedly revealed that she was used to entrap the woman who had lodged a rape case against a senior IFS officer. She was allegedly instructed to frame the rape victim in a drug peddling case.

The complainant told police that she was tasked with capturing compromising videos of the rape victim who had filed the case against the IFS officer. She claimed that, after several failed attempts to obtain the videos, the victim was drugged with sleeping pills, and obscene footage was recorded without her consent. Later, the IFS officer was bailed out from the charges.

Furthermore, the complainant has accused MLA Munirathna of raping her at his office within the state legislature, in his official vehicle, and at his godown. She has alleged that he recorded videos of these assaults.

Police sources also revealed that the victim in the MLA's case provided details of a plot involving sending HIV-infected women to Munirathna's targets in an attempt to ruin them politically and personally. She also disclosed the names of several politicians whom she had entrapped through honey-trapping.

The woman further claimed that Munirathna had threatened to have her son kidnapped and killed if she refused to comply with his demands. According to her, the MLA had a well-organised team dedicated to carrying out these honey-trapping operations, and she provided details about his close associates and relatives involved in the scheme.

Munirathna, who was in judicial custody following his arrest in the rape and honey-trap case, has now been taken into the custody of the SIT.

The MLA was transferred from Bengaluru Central Jail to the CID office on the night of September 24. The BJP legislator, however, has denied all the allegations, claiming they are false.

Karnataka Congress leader D.K. Suresh had alleged that Munirathna was trying to infect his adversaries with HIV and that the government should investigate the matter.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.

New Delhi: Seeking to strengthen bilateral ties, India and the Maldives on Monday inked a currency swap agreement to the tune of $400 million, a move that would help the archipelago nation overcome foreign exchange reserve issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu also launched Rupay card in the Maldives, inaugurated the new runway at the Hanimadhoo International airport and agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations that had hit a rocky patch last year.

Muizzu, who is on a four-day state visit, held talks with Prime Minister Modi at the Hyderabad House here.

After the talks, India also handed over 700 social housing units to the Maldives built under the EXIM Bank’s buyer’s credit facilities.

"Today, we have inaugurated the redeveloped Hanimaadhoo Airport. Now, the Greater Male Connectivity Project will also be expedited. We will also support the development of a new commercial port in Thilafushi," Modi told reporters here with Muizzu by his side.

Modi said India and Maldives have decided to initiate discussion on the Free Trade Agreement to further strengthen economic ties.

The prime minister described Maldives as a "close friend" which had an important position in India's neighbourhood policy and SAGAR vision.

"India has always fulfilled the responsibilities of a neighbour. Today, we have taken up the vision of a comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership to give our mutual cooperation a strategic direction," Modi said.

Earlier, Muizzu was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhawan by President Droupadi Murmu. Prime Minister Modi was also present on the occasion.

Muizzu was given a tri-services guard of honour before he drove down the Rajghat to offer his respects at the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.

The ties between India and the Maldives came under severe strain since Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, took charge of the top office in November.

Muizzu won the presidential election last year on the 'India out' campaign and asked New Delhi to withdraw its military personnel posted in the archipelago nation by May this year.

The bilateral ties also hit a rocky patch when Maldivian ministers were critical of Modi. However, Muizzu has since toned down his anti-India stance and even sacked ministers who were critical of the Indian prime minister.

As the Maldives was grappling with a serious economic downturn, India has decided to extend vital budgetary support to the Maldives government with the rollover of a $50 million Treasury Bill for another year.
